I am really surprised that they are not even waitlisting excellent candidates, but rather just throwing them straight to the ding pile.

Man, I'm really sorry to hear the news. I know we shouldn't dwell on it so I'm just going to encourage you to kick butt on all your other apps. Get into HBS or Stanford instead! CBS (and I) will have missed out because of this... all the best, guys.

Does any one else think that Columbia might end up selecting fewer students from ED... Maybe the adcoms believe that RD will have stronger applicants due to the economic crisis...

Comes to mind seeing so many genuinely interested studnets being dinged

I doubt it. Columbia has always been very conscious of its yield numbers (its yield is higher than all other schools other than H/S), so it's in their best interest to select quite a few ED applicants. I think this proves that the applicant pool is that much stronger or larger this year compared to years past.
