Re: Doris spent 2/3 of her savings on a used car, and she spent 1/4 of her [#permalink]
Let the savings be "X".

\(\frac{2}{3}\)x is spent on used car. \(\frac{1}{4}\) of remaining is \(\frac{1}{3}*\frac{1}{4}*x\) = \(\frac{1}{12}*x\)

\(\frac{1}{12}*x\) = $250
x = $3000

Doris spent 2/3 of her savings on a used car, and she spent 1/4 of her remaining savings on a new carpet. If the carpet cost her $250, how much were Doris’ original savings?

A. $1,000
B. $1,200
C. $1,500
D. $2,000
E. $3,000

1/4 represents 250

So, the full amount = 4*250 = 1000

1000 represents 1/3 of the balance

1/3 represents 1000

Full amount = 1000*3 = 3000.

E is the correct answer.
