Re: ESR Analysis for the Preparation Strategy [#permalink]
[quote="EMPOWERgmatRichC"]Hi mynamegoeson,

First off, a 630/Q47 is a strong score (it's just a bit shy of the 80th percentile overall), so it could be enough to get you into your first-choice School. As such, a retest might not be necessary. Depending on the Schools you plan to apply to, you would likely find it beneficial to speak with an Admissions Expert about your overall profile. There's a Forum full of them here:

https://gmatclub.com/forum/ask-admission ... tants-124/

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so since you studied for just about 6-7 weeks, that might help to explain why you did not score higher. From what you have described, you took the GMAT at the end of February - and that was 5 months ago. Thus, while there is still some valuable information in this ESR, it might not be a great way to assess your current skills, strengths and weaknesses. As such, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:quote]

Hi Rich,
Thanks for your reply.
I took my GMAT on 17th July 2017
Studies:
1) How recently did you restart your studies? Started 2-3 days back. I took GMAT on 17th July, 2017
2) What study materials did you use for your first attempt? What study materials have you used since then? Manhattan SC, Powerscore CR, and OG17
3) Have you taken any recent practice CATs (and how have you scored - including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)? Not Yet. Last exam was GMAT (Q47, V29)

Goals:
4) When are you planning to take the GMAT? Until mock scores are not in range of 37-42
5) When are you planning to apply to Business School? 2017-2018
6) What Schools are you planning to apply to? Tepper, Haas, Insead, LBS, Cornell

Someone has rightly said " we must try to achieve the best within us" . I have prepared my mind and soul again for the next and final shot at GMAT.

I have score poorly in my first attempt (630) and planning to cross the 700 barrier this time.
I gave my first GMATPrep on 7 Jan 2017 and scored a 570 (Q47, V22, IR3)(out of touch with relevant studies for 5 years) and then ultimately scoring 630(Q47, V29, IR 6, AWA 6)(after 6-7 weeks of study) on the Actual GMAT
I am trying to prepare a plan to give my best shot this time.
Draft Plan:
Verbal (Practice + Reading NYT, Books, Novels)
SC : Solve every official question on the planet with an error log
CR : Solve every official question + LSAT questions
RC : Practice all questions

Quant (Practice + Timing)
PS: Solve official questions and work on timing
DS: Solve official questions and work on timing

Problem: Not able to identify the weak areas (in a Verbal its a 1/2 probability of all types of questions) (In quant Probability, Number properties, Algebra, Geometry all seems to be weak but then i am able to score 46-49 consistently)

I would request you to go through my ESR (Snapshots attached) to help me prepare a plan this time.
Any recommendation/suggestion from anyone is invited.
Could you post your latest GMATPrep scores, please? As for your quant, even though your score has remained the same (47), it seems that you are, or have become, very good at quant. I wouldn't expect zero mistakes in the first two sets otherwise. Focus on (a) managing your time better, so that you don't have to rush through questions at the end (as you had to this time) and (b) getting faster at solving questions. The first should be done as soon as possible, and the second needs to be worked on over time.

You've improved significantly in verbal in a relatively short period of time (6-7 weeks), so I would not advise you to completely change your strategy. Also, the fact that you're not able to identify your weak areas could just mean that you're improving in all of them. Nevertheless, you need deeper analysis to identify any patterns in your mistakes.

List down your target score and date, materials already used, and practice test scores. Also, keep in mind that the first attempt is almost never indicative of what you're actually capable of.

Thank you very much Sir for your comments.

I am planning to give my GMAT ~29 September. (2 more months). Although i have promised myself that i will not book the exam until i see a consistency in my Verbal Scores (>35)
Started the following
1. SC - I am going back to basics to learn relevant Grammar from "Grammar for Dummies" and in parallel keep solving official questions to keep the taste alive. Reading Few Good English Sources (Ayn Rand, Bestsellers, NYT). Keep Practicing and maintaining error logs. i felt that the real exam questions were significantly different than what i had practiced.
2. RC - Practice is the only key here. Trying to develop quick Reading and comprehending habit
3. CR - Weakest Area (Revise Powerscore, Start to practice targeted topic wise question to understand the patterns). Real exam nervous caught me in this section.

4. QUANT - Daily timed Practice

Target is Q50-51 V38-42

Very informative thread indeed. On a side note, I took the GMAT yesterday and scored a 640 Q44V34 and feel that many insights from the experts here would be applicable in my case as well.

Luckisnoexcuse : After how many days will I get the option to purchase an ESR Report ?

I wonder why your verbal score is so different in those two tests. Did you see any questions that you were already familiar with? If not, you should already be capable of getting 35+ on verbal.

As for the material, I haven't seen the Dummies book, but NYT should be good from both an SC and an RC perspective.
