If we modify the condition and the question, and if A~B:w, B~C:x, C~D:y, D~E:z, the question becomes w<y?.
Looking at the condition 1), we get w+x<x+y --> w<y.
Looking at the condition 2), we get, w+x+y<x+y+z --> w<z. Since the condition 1) is sufficient, the correct answer is A.

(1) The distance between A and С is less than the distance between В and D.
(2) The distance between A and D is less than the distance between В and E.

Statement 1
The distance between A and С < distance between В and D.

Distance between A and C= Distance between A and B + Distance between B and C
Distance between B and D= Distance between B and C + Distance between C and D

Distance between A and B + Distance between B and C < Distance between B and C + Distance between C and D

or Distance between A and B < Distance between C and D. Sufficient

Statement 2

The distance between A and D is less than the distance between В and E
distance between A and D = Distance between A and B + Distance between B and C + Distance between C and D
the distance between В and E= Distance between B and C + Distance between C and D + Distance between D and E

Distance between A and B + Distance between B and C + Distance between C and D< Distance between B and C + Distance between C and D + Distance between D and E

Distance between A and B + Distance between B and C < Distance between B and C + Distance between D and E. Not sufficient

A is the answer

(1) The distance between A and С is less than the distance between В and D.
(2) The distance between A and D is less than the distance between В and E.

Statement (1) AC< BD ,Now we can say that AB< BD ,CD<AC .So AB<CD,Sufficient

Statement(2) Clearly insufficient because there is no indication of distance from C to any point

Correct Answer A
