(C) strengthening the economy of the South through soil improvement and crop diversification
(D) the strengthening of the economy of the South through improving soil and crop diversifying
(E) the economic strengthening in the South with improving soil and diversifying crops
Answer: C

please elaborate your choice!

Lets check for the split...

the economic strengthening vs strengthening the economy ---- latter suits the sentence so A & E are out.

parallelism check on B, C & D----- C & D fits..

Between C & D , strengthening the economy wins over D... Hurray

There is something missing in this SC..

Look at the MGMAT guide:

George Washington dedicated his life to the economic strengthening of the south with improvement of soil and diversification of corps.
A. the economic strengthening of the south with improvement of soil and diversification of corps.
B. strengthening the economy in the south with soil improvement and diversification of corps.
C. the strengthening the economy of the south through soil improvement and crop diversification.
D. the strengthening of the economy of the south through improving soil and crop diversifying.
E. the economic strengthening in the south with improving soil and diversifying corp.

Now it makes sense why it is C. Because you logically have THE STRENGHTHENING and not only STRENGHTENING in answer C !

Hope it helps! For other info, clic here: http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/geo ... t2122.html

'strengthening the economy' is different from 'the economic strengthening'

Intended meaning is that GW dedicated his life to strengthening the economy. Additionally, 'soil improvement' must be parallel to 'crop diversification'

Only option C fulfills the conditions.

Typo in C. Should be:

George Washington dedicated his life to the economic strengthening of the South with improvement of soil and diversification of crops.
(A) the economic strengthening of the South with improvement of soil and diversification of crops
(B) strengthening the economy in the South with soil improvement and the diversification of crops

"strengthening the economy": the object of strengthening is economy - what is strengthened? The economy is strengthened.
"economic strengthening": economic is the adjective of strengthening - how was the strengthening? It was economic (does not make any sense though - "economical" would still make some sense)
In the first case, you do not know how was the strengthening and the second you do not know what was strengthened.

Thanks sayantanc2k. I can see the difference now.

Also, "economic" and "economical" have different meanings. "Economical" means frugal or cost effective. That's an entirely different meaning than the adjective "economic". "Economic" means, literally, pertaining to the economy, which is more often reserved for concrete nouns (such as reports, Etc) than for participles. That occurs because there's less ambiguity with concrete nouns.

C concisely states the answer- it's not even that the phrase "economic strengthening of the south" is awkward but it is simply too verbose; ironically, some of the RC passages are written using phrases like that. You don't necessarily have to agree with the stylistic conventions on the GMAT- you just have to know them to do well.
