\(l_1 = l + 0.1l = 1.1 l\)

\(A_1 = (l_1)^2 = (1.1l)^2 = 1.21l^2\)

Hence, \(\frac{1.21 -1}{1} = 0.21\)

Asked: If the sides of a square increase by 10%, how much will the area be increased in percentage?

Area of a square = \(a^2\); where a is side of the square

New Area = \((1.1a)^2= 1.21 a^2 = (1 + .21) a^2\)

When using successive percentage changes on 2 variables (which are multiplied), we can use the below equation.

Overall % Change = a + b + \(\frac{ab}{100}\), where a and b are the percentage changes.

Please Note: Percentages that indicate or cause a decrease should be taken as negative (loss%, discount %)

Here a = 10 and b = 10

Therefore Overall % change in Area = 10 + 10 + \(\frac{(10 * 10)}{100}\)= 20 + 1 = 21%
