We are given: -3 < x < 7 and -10 < y < -2

Note that we are not told that x and are integers.

Therefore, the minimum value of xy will be MORE than -10 * 7 = -70 ; and maximum value of xy will be LESS than -10*-3 = 30

So, the range of xy is: -70 < xy < 30 (this is option E)

Answer E.

xy at the extremes = {30,-70,-14,6}

30>xy>-70

Solution:

According to the question -3 < x <-7 and

-10<y < -2

=>The values of xy on multiplying the extreme values are

(-3 * -10) , (-3*-2), (-7*-10) and (-7*-2) is 30,6,-70,14


=> The maximum value of xy is 30 and minimum is -70

=> -70 < xy <30 (option e)

=> x is greater than −3 and less than 7: -3 < x < 7

=> y is greater than −2 and less than -10: -10 < y < -2

Range of possible values of xy: (-3 * -10 = 30), (-3 * -2 = 6), (7 * -10 = -70), (7 * -2 = -14)

Maximum value: 30

Minimum value: -70

Therefore, -70 < xy < 30
