In a certain class, 5/12 of all the students are girls and 1/4 of all the students are girls who take Spanish. What fraction of the girls take Spanish?

(A) \(\frac{5}{48}\)

(B) \(\frac{5}{12}\)

(C) \(\frac{2}{5}\)

(D) \(\frac{3}{5}\)

(E) \(\frac{7}{12}\)

Let there be 24 students

Girls = 10 ; Boys = 14

Spanish (girls) = 6

So, fraction of the girls take Spanish is 6/10 => 3/5 , Answer must be (D)

Any number that is a multiple of 12(lcm of 4 & 12) can be substituted for the number of students.

Let us assume there are 12 students.

5/12th of them = 5 students are girls

1/4 of all the students are girls who take Spanish

=> 1/4 *12 =3 students are girls who take Spanish

Fraction of the girls take Spanish = Girls that take Spanish / Total girls

= 3/5
