I am thinking about doing a 2 yr analyst program with an IB firm in NYC. A lot of people say that a good firm can get you into a good MBA program after just 2 yrs. How is this possible? Most schools (Harvard, Wharton, etc.) avg. 5+ yrs.

Harvard averages 4.5 years and Stanford averages averages 4 years, per BW.

A 2-year analyst program is excellent preparation for b-school and could lead in many different directions. However, these program are grueling and demand long hours. They do not guarantee your admission to business school.

Porscheboy16,

It's good to see that you're thinking about your future.

I work for a boutique investment bank. The workload is substantial in nearly all areas. As an analyst you will spend a great deal of time at work. I would only recommend a career in investment banking to those who really do enjoy finance. While the pay can be excellent, you will find that it is not that great on a per hour basis in the early part of your career (you could often be working on weekends or late into the evening in some cases). Having said that, I am a firm believer that a couple of years as an investment banking analyst can be a great foundation for a career.

The point that I’m trying to make is that if your only goal is to get into HBS or Wharton, then you will probably hate investment banking, you won’t be motivated and your lifestyle will suffer.

Try taking some corporate finance classes at university if possible. This should give you an idea of the basic concepts of finance. I see from the other post that you're studying economics. This is good.

You might want to visit the websites of the various big investment banks. This will give you an idea of the various roles people take at these firms. It can be quite varied and recruiters will expect that you have an understanding of what the firm does in general and what kind of work is done in each area. The nature of work in M&A and Corporate Finance is very different from Investment Management, even though you would need good analytical and writing skills in both.

Thanks. Here is my current plan.

I am going to get my MA in Economics from UDel while getting involved in a non-profit group. Right now, I am trying to get an intership with an I-Bank the summer between my BA and MA (June-August 2006)

An internship is probably a good idea if you want to get exposed to the industry.

Most internships at the big IB firms offered to non-MBA students are for undergrads in the summer before their last year. Some firms will make job offers to interns who prove themselves during the summer to come back to work there post graduation.

You might want to check the websites of the firms that you're interested in immediately, as the application process for internships and analyst jobs starts very early and is competitive.

What's your motivation to do an MA in Economics?

Refine my analytical skills, and add more finance-oriented courses into my curriculum. I feel that most big companies may see me as too young b/c I am graduating at 19.

An internship would be a great idea. You would be able to see if you like th work and atmospher of an IB firm.

For all the people who are interested in the investment banking field, the ITM University offers investment banking courses that train candidates in this field. The college has all latest facilities and a reputed staff to train candidates. Visit the institute website if you wish to know more about the course.
