Re: Verbal Question of the Day Chat Group [#permalink]
Rising inventories, if not accompanied by corresponding increases in sales, can lead to production cutbacks that would hamper economic growth.

In this sentence, is the part "increases in sales" correct?

Shouldn’t it be "increase in Sales"?

Yes correct, Rising inventories and increases (or increase) in sales happening at the same time. There is no error here. Don’t listen to your ears ! In GMAT correct sentences are often heard weird. Just try to find deterministic errors

Q1. When the heart is under duress, it releases proteins known as troponins into the bloodstream. In elite marathoners and cyclists, troponin levels become so elevated after a race that they are indistinguishable from those observed in patients who have recently suffered a heart attack. Despite the benefits of exercise, it is evident that too much running or cycling, even for one day, has a detrimental effect on health. Which of the following would be most useful to determine to evaluate the argument? (A) Whether non-elite runners and cyclists, after prolonged exercise, have more troponin in their bloodstream than do elite athletes. (B) How long the body takes, on average, to restore elevated troponin levels to normal. (C) Whether the body produces any other substances after extended periods of exercise that may be harmful. (D) Whether the body sustains irreparable damage as a result of a long-distance run or bicycle ride. (E) Whether other forms of prolonged cardiovascular exercise, such as swimming, also lead to elevated levels of troponin in the body. Difficulty - Hard

Q2. Plantings of cotton bioengineered to produce its own insecticide against bollworms, a major cause of crop failure, sustained little bollworm damage until this year. This year the plantings are being seriously damaged by bollworms. Bollworms, however, are not necessarily developing resistance to the cotton’s insecticide. Bollworms breed on corn, and last year more corn than usual was planted throughout cotton-growing regions. So it is likely that the cotton is simply being overwhelmed by corn-bred bollworms. In evaluating the argument, which of the following would be most useful to establish? (A) Whether corn could be bioengineered to produce the insecticide (B) Whether plantings of cotton that does not produce the insecticide are suffering unusually extensive damage from bollworms this year (C) Whether other crops that have been bioengineered to produce their own insecticide successfully resist the pests against which the insecticide was to protect them (D) Whether plantings of bioengineered cotton are frequently damaged by insect pests other than bollworms (E) Whether there are insecticides that can be used against bollworms that have developed resistance to the insecticide produced by the bioengineered cotton Difficulty - Hard

CR Questions December - 31 :

Q1. Naomi, who owns a cookware appliance store, has donated cookware and other electronics to programs intended to develop cooking skills at schools within that area. She found statistics relating to the obesity levels in young adults to be disturbing, she wanted to do something to encourage better eating habits by helping people cook their own food at home. Some members of the community have shown their support for this action by purchasing cookware appliances from Naomi’s dealership.

Which one of the following propositions is best illustrated by the passage?

A The only way to reduce obesity is by eating home cooked food.

B Educational session on cooking are the only way to encourage youth to eat healthier

C Young adults are the group most likely to benefit from cooking programs.

D It is usually in ones best interest to perform actions that benefit others.

E Altruistic actions sometimes have positive consequences for those who perform them

Q2. Before the advent of writing each of the isolated clans of the Comaquogue tribe had master storytellers whose function was to orally transmit the clan’s tradition from one generation to the next. When writing was developed within certain clans of the tribe, their master storytellers disappeared within a few generations. This stands to reason, since the availability of written records obviated the need for masterful oral communicators to keep the tradition of literate clans alive. What has puzzled anthropologists, however, is the total lack of masterful storytellers in modern illiterate Comaquogue clans.

Which of the following, if true, best helps to explain the puzzling situation mentioned above?

(A) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clan members display personality characteristics that resemble their ancestors more closely than they resemble the characteristics of modern literate Comaquogue clan members.

(B) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clans participate in more ritual gatherings than most modern literate Comaquogue clans do, but they participate in fewer ritual gatherings than did their common ancestors.

(C) Modern illiterate Comaquogue clans are recently descended from long-time literate clans that failed to pass on the skills of reading and writing due to a devastating 75-year war.

(D) The celebrations of modern illiterate Comaquogue clans involve a great deal of singing and dancing, and children are taught clan songs and dances from a very young age.

(E) The traditions of modern illiterate Comaquogue clans are an amalgamation of the cumulative experiences of previous generations plus innovations to the heritage added by the current generation of clan members.

Well option E is a promising candidate here. Argument says Naomi owns a cookware appliance and she is also concerned about deteriorating health of young adults due to obesity. So she plans encouraging eating healthy ( no selfish motives are presented). Some people help her motives by buying cookware from her stores. So her selfless act has indirectly benefited her by boosting her cookware store sales. If you look at other options, they are too extreme to be considered an inference.

Hello fellas, I have a question
ANS: No type of clock that keeps time more stably and accurately than a Shortt clock relies fundamentally on the operation of a pendulum.
>May I confirm if the basis to choose C is because the Shortt clock uses 2 pendulums? Or do I misinterpret the wordings. Thanks in advance
