Q1. A scientist made three observations: (1) in the world’s temperate zones, food is more plentiful in the ocean than it is in fresh water; (2) migratory fish in temperate zones generally mature in the ocean and spawn in fresh water; and (3) migratory fish need much nourishment as they mature but little or none during the part of their lives when they spawn. On the basis of those observations, the scientist formulated the hypothesis that food availability is a determining factor in the migration of migratory fish. Subsequently the scientist learned that in the tropics migratory fish generally mature in fresh water and spawn in the ocean. Which one of the following would it be most helpful to know in order to judge whether what the scientist subsequently learned calls into question the hypothesis? (A) whether in the world’s temperate zones, the temperatures of bodies of fresh water tend to be lower than those of the regions of the oceans into which they flow (B) whether the types of foods that migratory fish eat while they inhabit the ocean are similar to those that they eat while they inhabit bodies of fresh water (C) whether any species of fish with populations in temperate zones also have populations that live in the tropics (D) whether there are more species of migratory fish in the tropics than there are in temperate zones (E) whether in the tropics food is less plentiful in the ocean than in fresh water Difficulty - Hard

Q2. Xycorp plans to develop an innovative new video game involving extremely realistic three-dimensional simulations of hand-to-hand combat. The cost of developing and refining the relevant technology, however, is prohibitive for Xycorp, so the company must look to outside sources for funding. The military will only fund the development of technologies that pertain directly to military training or operations, so it is clear that Xycorp will have to look for funding from non-military sources. Which of the following is assumed in drawing the conclusion above? (A) The market for video games such as Xycorp’s proposed product will not expand markedly in the near future. (B) Xycorp’s development project will be so costly that only large organizations, such as the military, will be able to provide sufficient funding for it. (C) In originally conceiving the idea for the new video game, the developers at Xycorp were not inspired by actual, historical military operations. (D) The military will not use the new gaming technology to train recruits in hand-to-hand combat. (E) The military does not stay abreast of non-military technological developments such as video games.

CR Questions February - 26 :

Q1. People often praise poems for their truth. But to argue that expressing true propositions contributes to the aesthetic merit of a poem is misguided. Most of the commonplace beliefs of most people are true. Whatever the basis of poetic excellence is, it must certainly be rare rather than common.

Which one of the following most accurately describes the role played in the argument by the claim that whatever the basis of poetic excellence is, it must certainly be rare rather than common?

(A) It is the overall conclusion drawn by the argument.

(B) It is a premise that, in conjunction with another premise, is intended to support the argument’s conclusion.

(C) It is a premise offered as the sole support for the argument’s conclusion.

(D) It is background information that, in itself, does not provide support for the argument’s conclusion.

(E) It is a proposition for which the argument seeks to advance an explanation.

Difficulty - Hard

Q2. In 1984, network television commercials accounted for 80% of all network and non-network television advertising revenue. In 2004, that figure was 60%. During that same period, operating cost for the networks remained steady, and in 2004 every major network announced record setting profits.

The information above, if true, supports which of the following conclusions?

A) Between 1984 and 2004, the number of homes with access to non-network television channels increased by more than 20%.

B) Teenagers comprise a growing proportion of television viewers, and teenagers prefer to watch non-network television shows.

C) The amount of advertising revenue earned from non-network television commercials in 2004 was greater than the amount of revenue earned by network television commercials in 1984.

D) Between 1984 and 2004, advertising revenue earned from non-network television commercials grew at a faster rate than revenue earned from network television commercials.

E) Soon revenue from non-network television commercials will surpass revenue from network television commercials.

I think B can be an answer to Question1
B. Although a law has not been formed, many cyclists and skateboarders do wear protective gear out of their own wish to stay safe.
Arguments conclusion is to make a law to wear helmets to prevent accidents for non motorist vehicles.
Option B implies many of the people have already been using the protective equipment which weakens the authors argument to wear helmets

Hello,

Is there anyone who has attempted both the classic and focus modes of the GMAT?

I took the classic in December, but now I am preparing for the focus edition as I do not have a choice.

Can someone please guide me on how I should proceed with it? Which coaching is the best? What materials should I refer to? I want to take it at the end of April.

hi guys, Can any one tell me how BF1 is not the main conclusion in this CR Q? The whole arg revolves around the BF1 so I thought this must be the central idea of the argument and hence be the main conclusion. That’s why I marked A. What’s the flaw in my answer? If BF1 isn’t the main conclusion then which sentence is the main conclusion in the arg and how?

CR Questions February - 29 :

Q1. A certain experimental fungicide causes no harm to garden plants, though only if it is diluted at least to ten parts water to one part fungicide. Moreover, this fungicide is known to be so effective against powdery mildew that it has the capacity to eliminate it completely from rose plants. Thus this fungicide, as long as it is sufficiently diluted, provides a means of eliminating powdery mildew from rose plants that involves no risk of harming the plants.

Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

(A) There is not an alternative method, besides application of this fungicide. for eliminating powdery mildew from rose plants without harming the plants.

(B) When the fungicide is sufficiently diluted it does not present any risk of harm to people, animals. or beneficial insects.

(C) Powdery mildew is the only fungal infection that affects rose plants.

(D) If a fungicide is to be effective against powdery mildew on rose plants, it must eliminate the powdery mildew completely.

(E) The effectiveness of the fungicide does not depend on its being more concentrated than one part in ten parts of water.

Difficulty - Hard

Q2. Scurvy is a disease caused by a severe deficiency of the water-soluble vitamin C; left untreated, the condition can cause death. During an expedition in the sixteenth century, Frankian sailors began to develop scurvy when their ships became entrenched in thick ice, forcing them to winter in the area. Many began to die. Upon visiting the camp, Donnacona natives introduced a tea made exclusively from spruce nettles, a drink that, when ingested, led to the recovery of the sailors afflicted with scurvy. It was not until the eighteenth century that citrus, a type of fruit high in vitamin C, was recommended for use by sailors to combat scurvy.

Which of the following conclusions can be most reasonably drawn from the information in the passage?

(A) The spruce nettle drink would not have cured the sailors of scurvy unless it had been presented in a water-based form such as tea.

(B) Spruce nettles contain vitamin C.

(C) The sailors who died would have lived if they had been able to drink the spruce nettle tea in time.

(D) The Donnacona natives understood the relationship between vitamin C deficiency and scurvy hundreds of years prior to the recommendations made in the eighteenth century.

(E) Spruce is a type of citrus.
