Answer is D : 120 Y/X

In one minute he can pack, Y/X so in 2 hours/ 120 mins, he can pack 120* Y/X

@Senthil1981,

It seems you have fallen for the trap. I recommend that you review the question.

Kramer can pack X boxes of cigarettes per minute. If there are Y boxes of cigarettes in one case, how many cases can Kramer pack in 2 hours?

A. 60X/Y.
B. 120X/Y.
C. 60Y/X.
D. 120Y/X.
E. (X + Y)/60.

Kramer packs X boxes in 1 minute.
He can pack one box in (1/X) minute

He can pack Y boxes in {(1/X)* Y} minutes

so in (Y/X) minutes he packs one case.
In one minute he packs 1/ (Y/X) case = (X/Y) case.
In 120 minutes he packs {(120 X)/Y} cases.

B is the answer.

Y boxes make 1 case, so X boxes make X/Y case.

Now X/Y case can be packed in 1 minute. In 120 minutes 120X/Y can be packed.

Picking numbers. Seeing answer choices, for easier arithmetic, X should be small. Y should be large and a factor of 120.

X = 1 box/1 minute
Y = 60 boxes/1 case

X= \(\frac{1box}{1min}=\frac{60b}{60min}=\frac{60b}{1hr}\)

How many cases in 2 hours?

\(\frac{1case}{60b}*\frac{60b}{1hr}*2hrs=2 cases\)

With X = 1, and Y = 60, find the answer choice that yields 2.

Eliminate answers C and D immediately. Large numerators, tiny denominator. (X = 1) No chance of 2 as an answer.

Eliminate E, too, from the numerator: (X + Y) = 1 + 60 = 61, which is prime AND odd. No way it can yield 2.

A) 60X/Y: \(\frac{60*1}{60}=\) 1 case. Not a match.

B) 120X/Y: \(\frac{120*1}{60}=\) 2 cases. MATCH

Plugging - in is the best way to solve such questions which have variables in answer choices:

Say 2 boxes makes 1 case, this means Y = 2

Say X = 1

Rate of Kramer = X box per minute or x/1

2 Hours = 120 minutes; So Kramer can pack 120 boxes in 2 hours.

As 2 boxes make 1 case, Kramer can pack 120/2 = 60 cases in 2 hours

Put X = 1 & Y = 2 in answer choices

B) is the answer

Don't take X = Y = 1 as it will make both B & D valid answers. Always be vary of the numbers you pick.

x packs --> 1 min
1 pack --> 1/x min
y packs --> y/x min
1 case --> y/x min
120 min --> 120x/y
Option B it is !!
