Premise:
Linsey lyrics are disjointed and subjective ----> Linsey been judged as bad songwriter
Many modern novelists writings are disjointed and subjective -----> Novelists are widely held as good writers

Conclusion:
Judgement against Linsey is ill founded

Only when the work of modern novelists and song lyrics is comparable and their is effect is almost equal, can the work of Linsey be concluded as good.

Only Option A depicts that.

IMO A.

linsey's song writting has been judged bad.
But author is deriving the conclusion that its not bad because it has the same characteristics as those found in the novels of good writters.

So assumption has to relate that song writting and book writting follow a similar pattern.
option 1 says that disjoint writting has a comparable effect in both the things.
Since disjoint writtng can make a good novel and disjoint writting has the same effect on song writting also so disjoint writting can make a good song writter also.

Straight A.

The argument would be relevant if song lyrics and modern novels have some basis for comparison with respect to disjointedness and subjective writing.

Linsey has been judged to be a bad songwriter simply because her lyrics typically are disjointed and subjective. This judgment is ill founded, however, since the writings of many modern novelists typically are disjointed and subjective and yet these novelists are widely held to be good writers.

Some says: Bad song writer -> lyrics are disjointed and subjective.
That is wrong
Good writer -> disjointed and subjective

Cleary, the missing link is the comparison between Songs and Writings. The author refuted the claim by stating that the fact that bad song writer because of disjointed and subjective lyrics was not the case for Writings. Are Songs and Writings similar in someway? Otherwise, the comparison is absurd and clueless.

Which one of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

Quote:
(A) Disjointed and subjective writing has a comparable effect in modern novels and in songs.

This matches our thought. Hang on to this.

Quote:
(B) Some readers do not appreciate the subtleties of the disjointed and subjective style adopted by modern novelists.

The authors explicitly says this "...typically are disjointed and subjective and yet these novelists are widely held to be good writers." So this answer can't be right. (B) is out.

Quote:
(C) Song lyrics that are disjointed and subjective have at least as much narrative structure as any other song lyrics do.

Narrative structure is irrelevant. We only worry about whether songs with disjointed and subjective lyrics are good or bad. (C) is out.

Quote:
(D) A disjointed and subjective style of writing is usually more suitable for novels and song lyrics than it is for any other written works.

Whether they are more suitable than others does not contribute to the doubt whether songs with disjointed and subjective lyrics are good or bad. (D) is out.

Quote:
(E) The quality of Linsey’s songs is better judged by quality of their lyrics than by the quality of their musical form.

This does not connect the point between songs and writings. Hence, (E) is out.

Only A remains. (A) is our correct answer.
