The following essay is from Michigan Application
1. Describe an experience or experiences you have had that highlight the value of diversity in a business setting. (500-word maximum)

My question is:
Is it ok to start the value of diversity in personal life and then move on to business setting or this question is meant to address only the business setting.

Yeah that's completely okay. Indeed, that's an angle that a number of applicants take.

Thanks for your reply,

My second question then would be, if this is the approach most of the applicants take then won't this make me one of the many in the crowd, even though other parts of the application does count.

That's a valid concern, but our advice generally is to use the best story/example that you have. Don't outsmart yourself and choose a less impressive or less clear essay topic just because you want to be more unique. Choose the story that will have the most impact and tell it well, and you'll be fine!

just4fun - what did you end up writing about? i know its an optional essay and I really can't seem to find any 'experience' as such even though there is diversity at my workplace..so i was considering to skip it

Hi Puhrince,

I guess in the new set of essays for Michigan this question is not there,

Still, I would say this question is important for other applications or for my/our own evaluation. I am still working on it, no solid ideas as of now but I am positive that I will come up with some good idea in coming time and as soon as I have some I will be more than happy to send a message to you.

just4fun, the essay is still there albeit as an optional essay - are you referring to it not being the main essay?
i was thinking of skipping this one!
