Thanks, nink. Good pointers to know ahead of time.

Also, I second this:

Quote:
Now, I suggest that you guys don't pick a too fancy of a place for happy hour. I remember when we went to the bar on the roof of the Library Hotel....we ended up paying like $10-$12 for a bottle of Corona's.... Men, I used to earn a nice paycheck back then but still, who pays that much for beer?

I realize I'm probably in the significant minority here but as a non-profit applicant I wouldn't mind a place where a drink costs less than my hourly wage.

As far as identification goes, we could try to all wear a similar color or something... and seem even more cultish than we already are... or maybe someone who's committed to being present (and early) can be the one wearing something distinctive and we'll all gather around him.

Either way, I'm partial to argyle.

I have one suggestion.

It's better if you reserve a table under 'GMATClub' and keep the lobby manager informed. Whoever arrives can go straight to that table.

Great idea. Just drop "GMATClub" from the reservation name. Do not mention the words "GMAT" or "Club" in the bar. Come up with another name for this group thingy.

You will find out that those words, "GMAT" or "Club" (especially) do not work so well at a NYC bar. You will either be laughed at or say what my fiancee told me, "GMATClub? What in the? You are such a geek...."

Thirdly, when Raabend came to town and we held the happy hour, we had no idea what Raabend looked like so I ended up going up to random dudes in the bar and asked them something like, "Hey, how ya doing?" Let's just say that it was embarrassing and I got odd stares........

Lesson from all this? Plan properly.

I agree with a lot of this. I've been to the Australian before, decent place, gets loud after work. I'm partial to the gingerman (https://www.gingerman-ny.com/), but there too, huge afterwork crowd. We could pick a new place each week too.

We were successful doing the SF meetup by PMing two "for sure" attendees' numbers to everyone else on the thread. When those people showed up, we could just wave to the entrance. Don't pick anywhere too crowded, since you won't be able to hear each other talk.

Ha ha. I knew this.

Probably something which is a combination of some names like -- Tom Clooney or George Hanks

or may be Megan Jones or Catherine Fox would work I guess

I think we should definitely go some place where there aren't too many people, and it's not too loud. It would be a strain to hear conversation otherwise, especially for a first encounter.

Gingerman is great but yeah, could be annoying.

Midtown? Ugh.

I think we should do one at the Dove again (awesome happy hour and not very fratty), and I can come if you guys do it early evening on Thursday the 11th. Friday, is well Friday and generally not a good idea, but next Friday I'll already be a few thousand miles away for Spring Break.

And of course the Village is convenient to several subways as well as the PATH.

By the way, ninky - stop lying. What you did at the Ginger Man was hilarious because you actually went up to random guys and said "are you waiting for someone?"

Do NOT book a table under GMATClub, thank you very much.

Oh, and the everyone wear the same color has actually been tried out before. Lilac, is all that I'm going to say.

Is this Dove the basement bar right next to Pluck U that looks like my great grandmother's parlour on the inside?

Because if so, that place is awesome (except their dubious credit card minimum), has nice happy hour specials and a waitcrew that actually makes an effort to remember your face.

Yes it is Coakleym.

The problem with that area remains that - while nice - it is where NYU is.

I might know too many people. If solaris1 is intimating splitting off for beer blast, he might be able to give you all a special Stern tour.
