Re: Between 1925 and 1935, 5 million of the 10 million houses constructed [#permalink]
Between 1925 and 1935, 5 million of the 10 million houses constructed in Liberia were built in the suburbs,
so that by 1938 there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as large cities.

A. there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as - should be there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as in
B. there was as many people living in the suburbs as the - should be there was as many people living in the suburbs as in the

C. as many people lived in the suburbs as those who lived in
D. as many people lived in the suburbs as those in
E. as many people lived in the suburbs as in

C, D, and E are all grammatically correct: as many people lived in the suburbs as (those (who lived) in. The part in brackets is understood, and does not add or subtract the meaning of the sentence.
So, by the criterion of concision, (E) is the most succinct.

OA after discussions...

Ans E. correct comparison between suburbs and cities. 'in' at the end of the option helps it to be correct.

If i am not wrong this is an elliptical construction.
Karishma has made an excellent poitn that we dont repeat the what we intend to compare in "as many as" and " as much as"

This is a really stalking difference between other comparison question and comparison question which has "as many as" and " as much as"

There is an example in OG 13 same type page num 697 Q no. 139

The answer is E
A , B , C can be dropped as the comparison is not correct
D is tricky as we are comparing number of people so those is not correct here
E is the answer

Am sorry no OE, but OA is

Responding to a pm:

A couple of things here:

1. Usage of 'as many as' or 'as much as'

From the way we use 'as many as', it is clear that the answer must be (E).
You can eat as many pies as you like. (After the second 'as' you don't repeat the word 'pies')
This year, she will not earn as much money as she did last year. (you don't refer to money again after the second as)

Similarly: there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as in large cities.

2. In options C and D, the use of the word 'those' is incorrect.
'those' refers to people but you are not comparing people. You are comparing the number of people.

Take an example: People of Michigan are friendlier than people of state X.
Here you are comparing people.

You can also write this as: People of Michigan are friendlier than those of state X.
Here, the use of those is correct.

VeritasKarishma GMATNinjaTwo Abhi077 BillyZ

I will use the same example as Karishma.

People in Michigan are friendlier than people in state X. Is this right?

People in Michigan are friendlier than those in state X. I would assumes this one is wrong, because those is referring to "people" that live in the Michigan state. Also isnt it idiomatic, would it be better to be "those of state X"?

Could you please give your (expert) opinion on this examples?

Thanks in advance!

A. there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as
his gives the meaning as though people lived before even the plan were implemented

B. there was as many people living in the suburbs as the
was isn't the right usage therefore out

C. as many people lived in the suburbs as those who lived in
those isn't the right usage which makes the comparison faulty

D. as many people lived in the suburbs as those in
Similar reasoning as C

E. as many people lived in the suburbs as in
The meaning and comparison is perfect therefore our answer

Therefore IMO E
