This sentence is entirely about 'The Whole Sentence Matters". Without recognizing the pronoun "it" toward the end of the sentence, far from the underline, you'd struggle to gain a foothold here. "Deer" is both singular and plural, so if you didn't notice that defining singular pronoun It" you wouldn't be turned off by the presence of "they", "their, and "them" in choices A, B, D, and E. But the word "it" makes "deer° singular, and only choice C (which avoids the use of a second pronoun) can then be correct.

Hi though its pretty obvious in terms of pronoun ref and SV agreement what is the correct ans yet I have a doubt in option C. I am not very comfortable with the idiom.. traveled from home to reach the Canadian wilderness; shouldnt the correct form be from X to Y where X,Y both ref to places. for eg here "traveled from home to Canadian wilderness, instead of verb reach?

Can someone allay my doubts pls

While the explanation makes sense, in the correct answer choice "traveled hundreds of miles from home to reach the Canadian wilderness" should be parallel?
Such a version would look like this "traveled hundreds of miles from home to the Canadian wilderness . Isn't this version more succinct/less redundant than the previous version

Infact E is wrong because of the usage them but C cant be right

In E: How can the relative pronoun ‘who’ be attributed to the deer? It is fatal.
In this sentence, having traveled is a modifier and ‘struggled’ is the main verb; if we combine ‘had traveled and struggled’ as part of the modifier, then the sentence will be a fragment without a verb.
In addition, if we say, had traveled, had struggled and had predicted—all in past perfect tenses, then there will be no simple past tense to distinguish the timeline. This will be structurally wrong. Therefore C.

I am confused by the explanation. There are actually two pronouns in the sentence, "their" and "it". They are not consistent with each other. Can this be a mistake itself? Or if not, how can I know which pronoun to be kept consistent with.

I was stuck in C & E but in E the contrast shown in original sentence is lost.. Hence C

This might be a stretch, I'm asking for a reply after 7 years after you posted it, but why does who not refer to Deer ?
