Opportunity Cost of Better GMAT Score vs. R1 Application [#permalink]
MBAPrepCoach and MG4MBACrystalBall, thank you for your response.

I am from an over-represented candidate pool. I am hence wary of R2 applications.
Given my profile, I have more chance to get into a B-School if I apply in R1 rather than R2.

I intend to apply for at least 6 B-Schools.
Since I am a working professional, I am not sure whether I can handle those many applications within a month.

Palladin, 6 apps in a month is definitely a stretch. If you are going to sprint, a better approach would be to get cracking now, in parallel to GMAT prep, if you can. Or else throw in programs that have mid-Oct sort of deadlines in the mix.

Good luck with the upcoming 'sprint' and do reach out for any help.

Cheers,

If you are over-represented or not, a better GMAT would be meaningful in optimizing your odds. Round 1 is not that favorable (in some case, it doesn't matter).

That said, if you'd like to toss one or two in Round 1, it would be good to learn the ropes at the worst, and give you something to fall back on if you do get in.

Could you tell me which of the following is a better option and why?
My target is Fall 2020 intake and I aim for the top 20 B-Schools in US.

  • Take GMAT by the 2nd week of August, get 720 in it and apply for R1 B-School deadlines that are in mid-September 2019.
  • Skip R1 deadlines, take GMAT by September/October, get 750 in it and apply for R2 B-School deadlines that are in January 2020.

Well aware that round 1 is best for overrepresented candidates but NOT AT THE COST OF APPLICATION QUALITY. And even if the testing goes to plan, as it rarely does, 6 applications written in one month is just unlikely to lead to a good result. If you don't spend the proper time on the applications, applying to Round 1 is what i call speeding up the rejection process.
