A class comprises 40 students and is divided into two sections. In sec [#permalink]
Class A avg = 85
Class B avg = 80
Total class avg= 82

Since it's a weighted avg question, and 82 is "closer" to 80, then we know that Class A has less students.

----2x ---------------3x
|-----------|---------------------|
80---------82 -------------------85

A+B = 5X
40=5x
x=40/5=8

Class A (as previously mentioned it's smaller) = 8 (2) = 16 (answer C)

Re: A class comprises 40 students and is divided into two sections. In sec [#permalink]
Simple answer = Total A+B scores / Total A+B number of students = 82
(85A + 80B)/ A+B = 82

85A + 80B = 82A + 82B ==> 3A=2B ==> A= 2B/3

Since A+B = 40 ==> 2B/3 + B = 40 ==> 5B/3= 40, 5B=120
Then B= 24, A= 40-24=16

Answer is 16 (C)
