Hi Paul,
I have an admit from Rochester Simon for the 18 month MBA program with 20 % schol. This schol would be extended to my second year provided I manage a B average (3.0/4.0) in first year and continue to do so. How big a challenge would this be ? The conditional offer has made me a bit sceptical.
My other admits are Univ of Iowa Tippie and York Univ.
I have struck down York for sure and I am waiting to hear from Tippie on schol (as of now they havent offered me anything).
I wanted to learn more about the pros and cons of the 18 month MBA program and the post MBA prospects at Simon as compared to Tippie. I am an international student and would want to work in US for few years to pay back my education loan (possibly at the ealrliest).
I am looking at Finance for specialization.
I need to reply to simon with confirmation real soon, Your opinion will certainly help me here.
Also, since Simon is an expensive school ,I was hoping to ask adcom to extend the schol. Can you please suggest how I should go about it.
Please also note an excerpt from their website :
Although entry in January was not initially designed to accommodate a summer internship, pursuit of an internship may be possible, for a highly motivated student, if certain conditions are met. Students should consider the following conditions when determining eligibility to pursue an internship:
1. The US Immigration and Naturalization Service requires enrollment of international students for at least one full academic year (3 quarters) before eligibility is granted within the United States for paid, off-campus employment, including an internship; and
2. A student's choice of concentration within their M.B.A. program may only allow for a Rochester-based internship if the courses required to graduate on time are only available at Simon during the summer quarter. Students would need to carefully review the timing of course offerings before considering pursuit of a summer internship to ensure degree requirements are met within the required 18 month timeframe; and
3. All incoming students, including those taking the ELUSC program, must complete the January Simon School Orientation process, and begin taking classes as a matriculated student during the winter quarter; and
4. All incoming students, including September and January admits, are unable to participate in on-campus job postings and interviewing events until Simon's post-Orientation formal résumé approval and job search training process is complete. The third and fourth conditions are required to ensure a quality job search experience for both students and recruiters.
How big a concern would this be when it would come to internships. I surely dont want to miss out on an internship opportunity.
Waiting for your reply.
Best

Hansy,
I can't say how hard it will be to maintain a B average at Rochester in your first year. I suppose it depends on how hard you work? Since they admitted you they believe you can handle their program. You should too.
I don't know what you mean by asking the adcom to "extend" the scholarship -- i.e., extend it to the second year? If so, it sounds like they've already told you that the second-year scholarship depends on first-year performance, so asking is moot. If you mean ask them for more money, my only advice, if you do it, is to do so respectfully and not to threaten them with Tippie's admission as some kind of "leverage."
Rochester is the stronger program of the three, especially if your goals are finance-related. If you can swing the finances, I say go for it.
Good luck,
