Hi there,

1) Good enough means you won't be immediately dinged. But it is low. An optional essay might be a good idea DEPENDING on what you write about. If you write, "Hey, it was just really hard" you're not going to get much help. But if you acknowledge the causes, show how you improved, etc. then yes, an optional essay might be a good idea!

2) These schools would be more willing to look at that goal, yes. But it's still up to you to show why those goals make sense. Product marketing is a difficult field to break into. Generally you either come from marketing or product and you have neither. Perhaps more realistic would be product management to then product marketing? But whatever that path - it has to make sense. Talk to folks similar to you and see if they were able to make that transition successfully at these programs.
