Profile Evaluation & School selection

Hi, would really appreciate your view on my profiles and school selection.


GMAT Scores:
• First Attempt: 500 (Q27, V18) - Just not my day
• Second Attempt: 610 (Q37, V37) - I didn't use the right material, didn't focus on OG
• Third Attempt: 670 (Q46,V36) - Self prep

GPA:
So I did my graduation from a no name college and with a low GPA (Bachelor of Science). Basically it will not help me showcase my academic ability. Am relying only on GMAT scores for that.

Work experience:
I have consistently performed well at work and have received very good performance reviews. I am confident of getting very good recommendations from my boss, clients and peers.



Career Goal:
Looking for career progression in a marketing role or an advisory role in a consultancy.
Though I have been working in the area of marketing and strategy for quite some time, I have no professional qualification in this area and this the gap I want to bridge. I know my career as a strategic marketer will not go far without an MBA.

Target Schools and Average GMAT Scores:(I may not apply to all schools; Have mentioned the GMAT Average and the 80% Average)

1. Kellogg (Northwestern): 714, 660-760
2. Fuqua (Duke): 697, 620-760
3. Ross (Michigan): 704, 650-750
4. Darden (UVA): 699, 640-750
5. McCombs (University of Texas - Austin): 684, 620-730
6. Johnson (Cornell): 687, 620-740
7. Kelley (Indiana): 664, 620-740
8. NUS (National University of Singapore): 667
9. NTU (Nanyang Technological University): 665, 610-720
10. Indian School of Business: 712, 670-750

Hi there!

Thanks for sharing your background. Let's start with your academic profile - you have a low GPA and having taken the GMAT a few times, you're struggling to hit the median at most of your target schools. This is a bit of a flag for many top tier programs. I'd recommend taking the GMAT again if and only if you're at a point where you're consistently scoring above 700 on your practice runs. Have you considered working on an alternative transcript to boost your GPA? Taking classes and performing well sends a strong message to many AdComs. Your career achievements are quite impressive! Assuming you can quantify a lot of the results you've shared, you have a great showing for your professional experience. It would be great to also demonstrate your leadership by sharing how large your team is that you manage. What about your involvement? I didn't see mention of any extra curricular activities or volunteer work. Of the schools you listed I'd consider applying to NTU, Kelley, and McCombs, but I'd also recommend applying to a few others lower in the rankings. A +700 GMAT would certainly change your school alignment. Best of luck on your upcoming application!

Hi, thanks very much for the reply. I have changed my target schools as below:

McCombs (University of Texas - Austin): 684, 620-730
Johnson (Cornell): 687, 620-740
Kelley (Indiana): 664, 620-740
NUS (National University of Singapore): 667
NTU (Nanyang Technological University): 665, 610-720
Indian School of Business: 712, 670-750
IIM Bangalore (Executive MBA) 700,
IIM A (Executive MBA)
Tepper 687, 624 - 740
Kenan-Flagler 710 (Median), 640 - 750

But for the Indian schools the GMAT scores for the other schools are within reach and seem more realistic.

If i take the GMAT again then i might not be able to apply in Round 1. So in a fix about my GMAT retake.

Is it advisable that i apply in Round 2, assuming I get a 700+ GMAT score?

Hey AJ,

That's definitely a double edged sword - R2 for an international Indian applicant is definitely ill-advised but a 30 or 40 point bump on the GMAT could help. As it stands, all of the US schools in your revised school lists are significant stretches and you're not setting yourself up for a successful run there. So if that's the case, you don't lose much waiting until R2, does that make sense? An almost automatic ding in R1 versus a GMAT score that MIGHT put you in contention in R2, regardless of the harder chances. There's no right answer here but if you're confident you can move your score up north of 700 (and by the way, GOOD JOB on the 500 to 670 journey - we didn't say it before but dude, that's impressive!) then yes, probably wait.

Hi, Thanks for you kind words about my improvement :) Yes, its been very difficult journey for me.

My top preference is the Indian schools so i am taking the GMAT again a the GMAT avg in these schools are higher. Moreover am not comfortable with the idea of applying to a B school with a 64 Percentile quant score. I want to improve this..
