Just as the Abnaki Indians of Maine joined forces with the French in the 1600s to fight off English settlers and preserve their native hunting and fishing grounds, so the Shawnee Indians of the Midwest joined forces with the British during the War of 1812 to fight off American troops in a last attempt to save its already-embattled traditional territory.

(A) so the Shawnee Indians of the Midwest joined forces with the British during the War of 1812 to fight off American troops in a last attempt to save its
already-embattled traditional territory
its cannot refer to "Shawnee Indians".

(B) the Shawnee Indians of the Midwest joined forces with the British during the War of 1812 to fight off American troops in a last attempt to save its
already-embattled traditional territory
Just as X so Y -> Idiom.
its cannot refer to "Shawnee Indians".

(C) in a similar fashion, the Shawnee Indians of the Midwest joined forces with the British during the War of 1812 to fight off American troops in a last attempt to save their already-embattled traditional territory
Just as X so Y -> Idiom.

(D) so joined the Shawnee Indians of the Midwest in force with the British during the War of 1812 to fight off American troops in a last attempt to save their already-embattled traditional territory
In force is not parallel with X joined Y.

(E) so the Shawnee Indians of the Midwest joined forces with the British during the War of 1812 to fight off American troops in a last attempt to save their already-embattled traditional territory - Correct

Common construction "Just as... so.." helps narrow down the choices to A,D,E.
A incorrectly uses "its" for Shawnee Indians (plural).

Leaving D and E.

D incorrectly uses so joined the..
E is correct.

Why is “joined the” is wrong in answer D? Isn’t this an example of verb inversion structure, which is accepted?
