I studied pretty hard over the last 3 months and scored a 660 on the GMAT yesterday (38 Quant, 42 Verbal). I was shocked and elated to see a Verbal score that high and dissapointed to see a Quant score that low, as during most of my practice tests I usually ranged in the 40-43 for Quant and 38-40 for Verbal.

The problem is if I retake it...I will most likely go up in Math (a few points) and down in Verbal (a few points) but overall might increase it 10-20 points.

My target schools are UNC, UVA, Duke.

About myself:
29 Year Old White Male
Software Engineer
3 Years at Accenture, 2 Years Product Mangager/Lead Developer at a small company, 1 Year Independent Contractor
3.3 James Madison University - Computer Information Systems

You should probably retake for those schools, but what was the percentile overal and for quant and verbal?

96th Percentile Verbal
57th Percentile Quant

What if my score drops when I retake it? Which score will the schools I am applying to use?

If you want to have a serious chance at UNC, UVA, Duke, you need to improve that quant score. Most schools will take the higher test score. Some will allow you to specify which one you want them to consider. Occasionally, a school will take the higher individual scores so you can designate the Verbal for Test 1 and the Quant from Test 2, but that is rare.

What about my second string schools:

Georgetown
USC

Are they going to laugh at my Quant scores?
What is the minimum Quant score (raw score) I would need with these schools?

Even for your "second string" schools, you want at least a 70% score.
