Re: Steves monthly salary consists of a fixed base salary and commission [#permalink]
Given: Steve’s monthly salary consists of a fixed base salary and commission on sales. The base salary is $42,000 per annum, and the commission is 20% of his total sales.

Asked: If his salary in June was $5,200, what were his total sales for the month?

Steve's monthly salary = fixed base salary + commission on sales = $42,000/12 + 20%*total sales = $5,200
$3,500 + .2*Sales = $5,200
Sales for the month = ($5,200-$3,500)/.2 = $1,700/.2 = $8,500

(A) $8,500
(B) $17,000
(C) $47,200
(D) $52,000
(E) $94,000

You don't have to do the math if you ballpark and use some common sense. If you check my other posts, you'll see that this is a VERY common theme. You do not need to find the correct answer if you can four incorrect ones.

Look at the answer choices.
20% of C, D, and E is already far more than $5200, so eliminate C, D, and E.
20% of B is $3400. That would mean the base salary would be $1800/month...1800*12 is well below the 42000 annually it's supposed to be, so eliminate B.

Answer choice A.
