Re: The cost for a pen and notebook at the campus bookstore is $10.50. If [#permalink]
The cost for a pen and notebook at the campus bookstore is $10.50.
Cost of pen = X
Cost of notebook = Y
X+Y = 10.50

Y = 10+X (the notebook costs $10.00 more than the pen)

10+x+x = 10.5
2x = 0.5
X = 0.25

Answer is A

We can say that
B+P = 10.5 -------- (1)

We can also say that
B=P+10 ------- (2)

Putting (2) in (1)

P+P+10 = 10.5
2P = .5

P = .25

The cost for a pen and notebook at the campus bookstore is $10.50. If the notebook costs $10.00 more than the pen, what does the pen cost (assuming there is no sales tax)?

A. 25 cents
B. 50 cents
C. 75 cents
D. $1.00
E. $1.50

Given cost for a pen and notebook at the campus bookstore is $10.50. If the notebook costs $10.00 more than the pen

Let p be cost of pen and n be cost of notebook

p+n=10.5

n=10+p

Combining both

p = 0.25

n = 10

Hence, OA: A
