insuff....
(2) BD=8=hypotenuse of isosceles triangle
sq.root2*a=8
a=4*sq.root2
area =32sq.mts

Statement 1 gives us the co-ordinate of point A
but we need co-ordinate of any other 3 points(B,C and D) so that we may get length of a side or diagonal from which we can calculate the area of square easily so insufficient
Statement 2 gives the co-ordinates of endpoints of diagonal BD using them we can find the diagonal length and thus the area of the square so sufficient

Correct Answer - B

In GMAT guidelines they say that pic is presented with the actual proportions, meaning that if you see square on the pic, you can be sure that sides of the figure have the same length, or like in our case, if you see equal lines on the linear plane they should be equal as well as angles. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

GMAT gives u enough info for deducing about given fig.
in above ques it was clearly stated that fig is sq. , if not so then the fig may be rectangle.

chetan2u , sir need your help here
if suppose the point of intersection of diagonals AC and BD is P , so in a square DP = BP and that is BD/2 and BD=side *sqrt(2) so , if the origin is O can't we say OA=DP and hence evaluate side and area
