Thanks.

Contenders for the right answer are B and D.

Relevant passage to preclude B:

Quote:
Soon a core framework of knowledge and skills for EM was created; Annals of Emergency Medicine was launched; and an Interim Review Committee (IRC) was formed. Finally in 1979, the American Board of Medical Specialties recognized EM as medicine’s newest specialty.

Annals are some kind of journal, hence its mentioned in the passage.

Only that there was a nationwide of EM programs at universities isnt stated in the passage so the correct answer is D.

Hope that helps :-)

Official solution

1. The passage suggests which of the following about medical professionals who wanted to practice emergency medicine after 1990?

(A) They could not fill the demand as utilization of emergency services increased.
(B) They, unlike their counterparts in other medical specialties, had to go through certification to be properly qualified to perform their duties.
(C) They could only become board-certified through an accredited residency program.
(D) They may have worked in emergency rooms, but they were not necessarily educated in an approved residency program.
(E) They face some of the most challenging and life-threatening situations, which is why they need to be highly prepared and qualified.

Correct answer: (C)

This specific type question can be answered directly from information given in the passage but requires critically reading the second and third sentences of the second paragraph. ABEM initially had two tracks for physicians to become certified. One way was to graduate from an approved residency program. The second way was an interim track for those experienced in emergency medicine but not formally trained. This second track expired in June 1988. Thus, after June 1988, one had to graduate from an IRC-approved residency program, making (C) the correct answer. (A) is incorrect because it is outside the passage’s scope. While the article states that the demand for emergency medicine increased, nowhere does it suggest that the increase in demand could not be met. (B) is incorrect because the reader does not know anything about the certification process of other specialties, thereby eliminating this answer. (D) contradicts what the passage claims. (E) is incorrect because it is outside the passage’s scope. While it may be true that emergency physicians face some of the most challenging medical situations, the passage never discusses this point.

2. According to information contained within the passage, all of the following were efforts that helped sway opinion about the specialty status of emergency medicine EXCEPT

(A) A coalition of doctors united to voice their concerns.
(B) A specialty journal was published.
(C) Guidelines and criteria were outlined for emergency practitioners.
(D) Medical schools nationwide introduced EM residency programs.
(E) A review committee was established.

Correct answer: (D)

Solution: This is a Specific question in which four of the answers will be found within the passage. The one that cannot be found from information in the passage is the answer to this EXCEPT question. (A) is mentioned. “...as patient demand for quality emergency care grew, a group of concerned physicians joined forces to found the American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).” (B) is mentioned. “...Annals of Emergency Medicine was launched;” (C) is mentioned. “Soon a core framework of knowledge and skills for EM was created;” (E) is mentioned. “...and an Interim Review Committee (IRC) was formed.” (D) is not mentioned in the passage. The passage claims that the University of Cincinnati started a residency program in emergency medicine, but nothing about other schools following this path, making (D) the EXCEPTION and the correct answer.

3. In the passage, the author is primarily concerned with

(A) outlining an unconventional approach to resolve a concern
(B) discussing the steps taken to accomplish an objective
(C) advocating the importance of challenging convention
(D) evaluating methods used to legitimize a specialty service
(E) explaining why a new specialty is needed for effective patient care

Correct answer: (B)

Solution: The passage lays out the steps that were taken to make emergency medicine a recognized specialty. Answer (B) reflects this main purpose. (A) is incorrect because while an approach is delineated to address a concern, there is no indication that the approach was unconventional. (C) is incorrect because the author of the passage is not advocating anything. (D) is incorrect because no evaluation is occurring. “Evaluate” means to determine or judge the worth of something. (E) is incorrect because while the opening sentence states that ACS published recommendations about the need for emergency medicine, it never explains why such a need existed.

Hi ammuseeru

IMO, here accomplishing an objective means establishing emergency medicine as medicine’s newest specialty and the majority of the passage deals with the same.
So option B is the best here which encapsulates this info.

P1 - initial challenges but later they found their way.
P2 - how EM works
P3 - after effects.

1. The passage suggests which of the following about medical professionals who wanted to practice emergency medicine after 1990?

P2- two ways
1. graduation from an IRC-approved residency program,
2. interim practice for those who were not formally trained but had experience in EM. This one was ended in 1988. So only 1st option left.

(C) They could only become board-certified through an accredited residency program.
----------------------------------------------

2. According to information contained within the passage, all of the following were efforts that helped sway opinion about the specialty status of emergency medicine EXCEPT

(D) Medical schools nationwide introduced EM residency programs.

----------------------------------------------

3. In the passage, the author is primarily concerned with

(B) discussing the steps taken to accomplish an objective

-------------------------------------------

4. The final paragraph functions in the context of the entire passage to

(B) present reasons that contributed to patients’ increased use of emergency health care

I think the answer to Q1 can also be D.

There is a possibility that some medical professionals might have been practising since 1980 without a certified residency program and also wanted to keep practising after 1990. So, D is not wrong as per the wording of the question. If the question would have mentioned "new medical professionals" instead of just "medical professionals", C might have been the correct answer.
