Re: When x is multiplied by 3, the result is 18 more than the result of [#permalink]
Very well explained MruDe! Thank you! I misinterpreted "subtracting x from 26" as (x-26). I was soo sure the OA is wrong until I say your explanation. Now I am slapping myself! :lol:

Gotta be careful!!

A) -4
B) -2
C) 11
D) 13
E) 22

The equation that can be formed is:

3x-18=26-x
or, 4x=44
or, x=11.

C answer.

To solve such problems, pay attention while you read question. Here, some of us might subtract 26 from x. Ex. 3x-18=x-26 which will lead to answer -4, which is wrong. In question, it has been clearly said to subtract x from 26. In maths, from always comes first.

I hope this helps.

\(x*3 - 18 = 26 - x\)

Or, \(3x + x = 44\)

Or, \(4x = 44\)

Or, \(x = 11\)

Hence, the correct answer must be (C) 11

When x is multiplied by 3, the result is 18 more than the result of subtracting x from 26. What is the value of x?

\(3x = (26 - x) + 18\)

\(3x = 26 - x + 18\)

\(4x = 44\)

\(x = 11\)

Hence, Answer is C

Not sure why this is tagged Number properties. It's more in line with algebra/ word problem type questions.

Question is a simple translation question, like a gift.

3x=18+26-x
4x=44
x=11
