Ensemble--singular noun,...
Was --correct verb for Ensemble

(A) the ensemble were touted as the country’s--wrong, SV error

(B) the ensemble was touted as the country’s--correct

(C) the country touted the ensemble like the---worng, modifier error

(D) touting the ensemble as the country’s--worng,modifier error

(E) they were touting the ensemble as the country’s ---worng, modifier error

Can anyone tell me what's wrong with c. B is passive, i thought Gmat prefers active sentences

(B) the country touted the ensemble like the best group in decades - Like only precedes a noun, but not a phrase.

as santoshx correctly pointed out the usage of "like" is incorrect.
Also, if I may, the GMAT has no preference between active and passive. Please do not eliminate a sentence just because it is in passive voice.
