Thanks for the reply Aringo!

I guess I saw my international background as setting me apart from others - is that not unique enough nowadays? In terms of work experience, it's been pretty standard progression: start with technical modeling work, more responsibility over time, been on the biggest project sold by the practice (actually helped to cultivate the relationship in the beginning), and sold a small project on my own. Have led teams of 5 in doing a project and also junior team members.

Regarding GMAT retakes, do you know how schools feel about submitting a score after deadline, specifically for Booth. I know their website says to submit everything by deadline, but if I email with a (potential) score increase, would they completely disregard? I'm not sure if I want to hold out on Booth till R2 because I'm not sure if I could do a 730+ given my two 710s. And all else in the application would be equal.

Lastly, I wasn't aware NYU stern had that high of a GMAT focus - their average gmat is 714 and within my range?

You are right that international experiences are great and can set you apart, but it’s hard to tell if your international experiences are unique enough for that based on what you wrote (keep in mind that you won’t be the only applicant with some international experience so even that has to be something special). International traveling for pleasure is also not something that the adcom will really focus too much on, in my experience.

But depending on what the international experience consisted of, you might be on to something there. If you’d like to discuss that part in more detail (totally understand that you might not feel comfortable getting into specifics about that on a public forum), please contact ARINGO directly for a some advice on that here: https://aringo.com/mba-process-registration/

As for submitting GMAT scores after the deadline it varies from school to school, but last I heard Booth will accept it. You might want to read up on other schools regarding that issue if relevant, though, as they don't all have this policy.

I am not sure where you got the GMAT average of 714 for NYU Stern from, as far as I remember it was 720 and that was actually lower than the previous year, which was lower than the previous year, I believe, so there is a chance that number goes up this year again (nobody knows for sure, of course). So for those wanting to be on the safe side, 710 might not be enough, unless there is something that makes up for the score in the profile and I am not sure I see that here (but again, I could be wrong, I would need more detail to know for sure). So I guess you could say that is a bit of a borderline case.

Hope that helps!

I'm really curious to hear your thoughts with regards to my chances, considering that my GPA and GMAT are on the lower end. I have poured a lot of time and love into my essays and am hoping to really use that to drive things in my favor. I'd love to hear a realistic take about my chances, and any tips you would be willing to share with me, for stacking the cards in my favor. Thanks a tonne in advance!

I would say most schools on your list are a bit of a stretch, unfortunately, but then again I haven’t seen your essays of course, so there is a chance I am wrong.

Since the list of schools is pretty long, though, I just hope you can justify fit for each of them. If that is not the case, make sure to do some more research on that part in order to make sure you only apply to schools that really fit you and your needs. Addressing that is a very important part of the essays, so it can really make a huge difference.

Given your background, I am thinking that some of the business schools that rank well for a specialization in entrepreneurship but are less competitive could be good options for you as well. So you might want to look into some of those schools too. See the latest rankings for that specialization here: https://aringo.com/mba-entrepreneurship-specialization/

So instead of wondering where you can get in, if you are very ambitious, try to focus on what school is most likely to help you achieve what you want to do and why, and you should be in pretty good shape!

Good luck!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but considering your nationality and your GPA, you need to up your GMAT score quite a lot in order to have a fighting chance at the schools you mentioned. So before you do anything else, start working on a new GMAT strategy would be my advice.

If you are willing to consider other schools it would be helpful to know what you value in a school and what your post-MBA goal is.

General information that I'm looking for is - Job prospects after degree, ideal profile with median GMAT score, and usefulness of the course.
Following are some courses that I know of and would like to know more about -

1. The Università Bocconi MAGER - MSc in MSc Sustainability and Social InnovationGreen Management, Energy and Corporate Social Responsibility
2. HEC Paris - MSc Sustainability and Social Innovation
3. RSM Erasmus University -MSc Global Business & Sustainability
4. UBC, Vancouver - MASTER OF SCIENCE IN RESOURCES, ENVIRONMENT AND SUSTAINABILITY (MSC)

6. University of Toronto -Master of Science in Sustainability Management (MScSM)
7. Columbia University - Master of Science in Sustainability Management

Hi and thanks for reaching out!

For more information about specific schools and programs we recommend either checking their websites or the threads about those specific schools here on the GMAT Club as you are more likely to find more updated information, as well as a variety of opinions there, but I do think that you should take a look at the following rankings in order to get started:
https://aringo.com/mba-nonprofit-corporate-social-responsibility-ethics-specialization/

As for strengthening your profile it is hard to know without having more details about your career and extra curriculars for example, but of course any promotions and leadership experiences you have at work, as well as reaching measurable and impressive milestones there would help. And a better GMAT score is a must for the top schools for an Indian applicant with a fairly basic profile.

Good luck!

Impressive profile with a decent GMAT score, unusual nationality and industry, but I especially like your work experience. Given all that, I do think your school selection is very realistic, especially considering that several of the schools you mentioned (such as LBS and HEC, for example) really appreciate international experience and you certainly have plenty of that.

So assuming your essays and recommendations will be strong as well, I would rate your chances as good.

Hi, and thanks for reaching out!
Your profile definitely has a lot of potential and things to work with. However, the work experience is your weakness as this is generally not what most business schools are after. Therefore, I would really recommend that you try to think of any measurable achievements during this experience that you could list in order to make that part a bit more interesting. If there isn’t anything that stands out when it comes to that, it could be an issue that might be difficult to overcome for you.

Besides the work experience part, I don’t see anything that urgently needs to be improved, maybe with the exception of the post MBA goal. It would help if you would have a story around why that is your goal and how your previous experiences are related to that and led you to that goal.

Best,
Ekta

Hi Ekta, and thanks for reaching out ARINGO!

If we assume you can bring out very strong essays and recommendations you might have a chance at Foster. However, as the strength of your essays and recommendations can be hard to judge in advance, even for a professional, I would recommend you put all the efforts you can into 1. Strengthening your essays and recommendations (you should even consider working with a professional on that part if you are not sure if you can do this on your own) and 2. Retaking the GMAT, if possible. That would make it much more likely for you to be admitted, but that said, an admission is possible now too, just not something you can take for granted in any way.

I would also recommend that you consider applying to other business schools unless there is a reason you only want to go to Foster, in order to have some more options, should Foster not admit you.

GMAT: 710 (47Q/40V/8IR/6AWA) Only took GMAT once. Hesitant to take again because while I consistently scored a higher composite, I had splits of 43-44Q/46-47V.
W/E: 8 years at matriculation with all of my W/E in sales & trading. Currently work in portfolio finance at a top hedge fund with global name recognition.
Activities outside of work:
    1. For the four years post-graduation, I competed in an individual sport where I was ranked top 100 in the world and I qualified for and competed in the Olympic Trials.
    2. My spouse and I are very active in an urban mentoring program and ended up fostering a child for 18mo that was part of that program.
    3. In addition to mentoring, I coached a youth club for the same sport as above. Extremely successful with high involvement (>300 hours a year for 6 years).
Post-MBA: Investment banking
Recommendations:First is from former manager at two different firms (brought me with him to new venture) who is now a Director of an MBB group. Second is from current work peer who has written recs for multiple people who went to H/S/W.

Dream: GSB (applying for Bonini Fellowship), Wharton, HBS
Reach: Booth, Kellogg
Applying via Consortium to: Ross, Haas, Tuck

FWIW I completed my undergrad at one of my dream/reach schools (not H) and my spouse completed her undergrad at one of the Consortium schools.

Interested to hear if I have >50% chance of getting into one of GSB/Wharton/HBS/Booth/Kellogg.

Lots and lots of potential here (love the extra curriculars especially!), but I am missing some detail in order to give you a fair and thorough evaluation, such as why you have chosen the schools mentioned (I am interested in seeing how well you can “demonstrate fit” with them) and how good your essays and recommendations are.
At the moment your profile is a bit below borderline for your dream/reach schools, but amazing essays, reasoning and recommendations can make a huge difference and therefore make your dream/reach schools a real possibility. However, I am not able to judge that part for now, but if your essays, recommendations and reasoning are anything below very impressive, I would not rate your chances as very good at your dream/reach schools so you really should be focusing on how you can make yourself stand out from a crowd and on how to convince those reach schools that they are the best option for you, for a number of reasons that will appeal to them. (Don’t forget that you can always get professional help with this part too, should you feel like writing essays for example is not right up your alley)

I do think your profile is competitive for the non-reach schools, though, so I would not worry about those too much if I were you. But the dream/reach schools are a another story...

Hello Team Aringo,

Kindly review my profile and share your valuable inputs.

Profile: I completed my graduation in Fashion designing from one of the top 3 colleges in Asia in 2014 with a CGPA of 7.43. I have been working with the biggest apparel organization in India for past 4 years. Have a healthy work experience across 2 different roles.

Extra-curricular: I am a national level athlete and I am regularly involved in different sports.
Have also won national level quiz competitions. Have been involved with couple of NGOs during my college days.

GMAT (Oct’2017) : 700 (Q-50, V-34, IR-8, AWA-5).

Areas of interest : 1) General Management, 2) Marketing

I need your help in deciding which colleges I should apply.

Should I target US B schools for either R2 this year or R1 next year ? Employment after completing MBA is an important criterion to decide which schools to apply. From few current students I have heard really negative reviews regarding job scenario for international MBA students in US. The situation is not bright in even top 15 colleges. Under the current geo-political situation, will it be a viable option to try for any US school?

With my profile, should I apply in NUS and INSEAD? What are the job scenarios post MBA in Singapore?

Also, I will be looking for a scholarship. Earlier I was targeting top 15 US B schools. Though my profile is extremely unique, my GMAT score is on a lower side. Being from India would go against me. Are there any colleges in top 15 where I can expect admission with scholarship?

I am okay to give GMAT again and if required then wait for one year before applying.

My first shortlist of colleges is below. Should I apply to any of these colleges in R2?
1. Kellogg,
2. Ross,
3. Fuqua,
4. NUS, and
5. ISB

Kindly review my case. Also please let me know if you need any other input to review my candidature. Thanks!

First of all, the whole issue of US schools currently is one that is debated and one that people have very different opinions on, so I don’t really feel comfortable making a recommendation on that part. We do know that the US schools are seeing less applications from Asian applicants at the moment (see: https://aringo.com/a-decrease-in-asian-mba-applicants-to-top-us-business-schools-due-to-trumps-expected-immigration-policies/), so if you should decide not to apply to US schools you certainly would not be the only one making that decision!

Have you considered European schools at all? (The reason that I am asking is that the job market in Singapore has its issues as well, so therefore my recommendation would be to consider European schools as an alternative)

As for your profile, a GMAT score of 700 is pretty low for an Indian applicant for the top schools, especially considering your GPA, so if you want to do something that could seriously improve your profile, I would recommend considering a GMAT retake. If you can get a 740 or better, your chances of admission would be significantly better.

The rest of your profile has a lot of potential though, but of course I am missing a lot of detail here, as I know nothing about your roles at work, for example, any work related accomplishments etc. You also did not mention anything about a post-MBA goal, and that is an important factor at many of the top schools as well.
But assuming that those parts are okay, I do think that great essays and recommendations could make some of the schools you mentioned a possibility. (not the top ones, however, I do believe those are out of reach for now)
However, scholarships can go either way, so I am talking merely about admission here.

Good luck!

Dear Team Aringo,

Thanks a lot for your analysis of my profile. It will definitely help me a lot. Will answer to some of the points raised.

In my first role I was working as a product manager. My key responsibility was to work on the brand's offering from concept till the final product reaches store. More like a brand management function. In my second role I am working as a planner and need to manage front end sales.
Though my background has been into fashion industry till now, i want to do my masters in General Management. I believe this will make me eligible for job across different industries. This is one of the primary reasons I am considering a two year course as of now.

I can't take GMAT before Spring, so should I apply in NUS in this round? It is definitely not as fancy an option as Kellogg/Fuqua but has lot of potential in current time. I have heard even more negative opinion about European job prospects. So not sure about them either. Also, can you suggest how much time will it take to work on application for NUS, individually and with a consultant.
Will be great if you can shed some light on what are the criteria one should consider while deciding a consultant for a specific college.

Can I have a call with anyone from your team to further decide the course of action?

Hi, yes I think a one on one consultation is probably the way to go here as the questions are very specific. (talking to one of our consultants is free and non binding in every way of course) so I would suggest you fill in this form to make that happen: https://aringo.com/mba-process-registration/
(You can add a link to this thread in the form as well when you fill it out so we know it's you)

If you do, a team member specializing in several of the schools mentioned will be able to contact you. But in general, what you are saying about European job markets is true for some of them, however not all.

Hi and thanks for reaching out!

The bad news is that your profile is a bit borderline at the moment, but the good news is that there are things you can do in order to improve it. Community and extra curriculars, for starters, as you mentioned yourself, and maybe you can even get a better GMAT score than anticipated?

You didn’t mention anything about your post MBA goal or why you have chosen the schools listed but if you can come up with great answers to that and make sure your profile is really presented in the best possible way I do see all the schools listed as possibilities. But as I said, in order for you to feel fairly confident about that you still have some work to do.

Please be as detailed as possible as even small details can make a big difference so the more you tell us, the better we can evaluate your chances. (Free of charge and during a non-binding consultation of course)

Founded a manufacturing start-up where I worked for 5 years. Grew the company revenue by more than 600% in five years before I decided to sell it. Reason being wanted to switch in a Operations role in Hi-Tech

Working in Amazon as Operations Manager for the past 2 years. Leading a team of 200 people

Co-curricular- Was the Vice President of a non-profit for 3.5 years, raised more than $60K for the same. Peer Coach at Ross, leadership positions in some clubs but nothing major.

I applied in B-Schools before my masters but got dinged by most. I’m only targeting the following schools-

1. HBS
2. Stanford
3. MIT
4. Haas
5. Kellogg (not sure)

I don’t think I can improve my GMAT any further. My goal is to transition into Product Management after MBA.

Thank You very much!!

So the good news is that your profile is decent. The bad news is that it is not very unique and as I see it, it lacks something that makes you stand out, at least the way you presented it here. And since you are going up against some of the most competitive applicants in the world with these schools, you need to stand out from a crowd somehow in order to have a chance of admission.

What you should focus on is your measurable achievements (that 600 % increase is great! And if you have anything else along those lines that you can add, even better!) and you also really need to work on the “Why MBA?” and “Why now?” part. If you can think of something unique there, your chances will improve significantly. Of course you can always get some professional help with that part if you struggle with that part on your own.

That said, you are in for a challenge with this profile, I think. That doesn’t mean that an admission is impossible of course, just that you will need to work quite hard on your application and get it just right in order to make it happen. I am afraid it’s really difficult to say for sure why you were dinged, without having seen those LoRs and essays (it is possible they are not nearly as good as you thought they were, after all), but as I see it, you come from a very competitive applicant pool (Indian AND finance!) and nothing really stands out or makes you unique, so to speak, so you really would have needed to have some kind of “angle” along those lines in order to increase your chances of admission, and I don’t understand from what you wrote if you had that.

Also, what is your post-MBA goal and why did you choose the schools in question? Your reasoning regarding that could also have played a part, if done right.
I think you would probably have benefited a lot from working with a consultant, so please consider that for next time. I also like the idea of going to London, as international experience (even if that is all you get out of your London move, which it might not be of course) is always a huge plus at business schools.
A higher GMAT score never hurts but that alone will not get you in, as I see it.

Hope that helps and feel free to get in touch with the ARINGO team if you’d like to chat with someone about what one of our consultants could have done for you:

4. McCombs
5. Mays
6. Kelley school of business

It’s not a bad profile at all, but there are a few things you could do in order to make it more competitive (I am sure you don’t need me telling you how competitive your applicant pool is!).

First of all, a higher GMAT score never hurts obviously (over 740 would be amazing and make a huge difference!) but the question is: do you think you have 20 points or more in you to make it better? Do you have a strategy for making that happen? If not, I would just focus on how you present all this in your essays, as you have a lot of interesting bits to work with, but you need to stand out and present yourself in the best possible way of course, for your applications to be really attractive for these schools.

But I would not say a retake is a must for you, unless you know for sure you can do better. Working with a professional on your essays, for example, could be enough in your case.

Hope that helps!

Hi!! Can you please evaluate my profile?

Indian Male
Class 10 : 95.6%
Class 12 : 95.2%
UnderGrad(2015) : 8.25/10
GMAT : 660(Q-43;V-38)
Planning to apply for 2019 intake.

Work Experience:
1. 24 months - a leading IT service provider; currently part of a 3 member team.
2. A couple of months in a state owned enterprise.

Have organized a number of events in college; involved in the complete build-up of events right from brainstorming names for the event to distribution of awards. Also have designed posters, banners and certificates as part of the events.
Community service : Few and far between; but planning on improving on this in the days to come.

I am planning on making a switch to a marketing career, specifically in the consumer goods sector and I feel that an MBA would help my cause. I plan on taking up the GMAT one more time. What are my chances of being admitted into some of the top(top 20 -30) programs.
Also would it be beneficial if I get some part time(say internship) experience in the marketing domain before I start my MBA? Or would an internship after a few years of full-time work be considered a negative?

So first of all, you need to specify the schools you are interested in a bit more, as just going for the top 20 shows you can’t really demonstrate fit with a particular school. So you need to start off by doing some research on this, and especially on schools that are good/specialized in marketing, because of your post-MBA goal.
(this list may come in handy when doing that research, by the way: https://aringo.com/mba-marketing-specialization/)

The reason is that an applicant who does not explain why he wants to go to the school in question and why he or she thinks that school and program is the best suited for them out of all business schools/programs is significantly less attractive to the schools than an applicant that has done this research and can focus on this in essays etc.

Deciding on a school will also help you figure out what your goal for your new GMAT score should be, so it is helpful in that way too. But let’s say anything under 720 will make top 20 schools challenging for a male Indian IT applicant.

Part time internships can be a good idea, depending on the particular internship, of course, but I definitely would not rule out that option if I were you.

The extra curriculars are not superimpressive for now, any leadership role in new extra curriculars you take on from now on would boost that part significantly!

Hi Team,

Wanted to get some perspective on a dilemma I am facing.
I am looking to apply to INSEAD, IE and Kellogg (1-yr) in R1 for the September 2019 intake. My post MBA goal is to start my own venture.
My work experience so far has been entirely in consulting (3 yrs in a big 4+ 2 yrs in a boutique). I am considering a job offer I have from a startup. The reason I interviewed was that I feel that a first hand experience in the startup space would help when I startup on my own, which I guess can help explain the reason for the change.

Other considerations: The new role will be of a Project Manager I will have more responsibility and leadership opportunities. However, it will probably be a bit difficult to get recommendations from my supervisor and I would therefore have to rely on recommendations from past employers.

Now my question is will a job switch just 4-5 months before submitting my application be looked at negatively by any of the AdComs? Or will it suffice if I explain that the reason for the switch was that I wanted to get some exposure to the functioning of startups before venturing out on my own?

Thanks!

Hi and thanks for reaching out!

I definitely think it makes sense for someone whose post-MBA goal is to start their own venture to look into a start up personally, but I don’t think any start up will do for this purpose, it should be something that has some kind of connection to what it is that you want to do in the end. Without knowing what kind of venture it is that you would want to start after your MBA and knowing more about the start up in question, it is hard for me to assess how similar they are but it is something you need to evaluate in order to make a smart decision yourself. If the start up is completely unrelated to your end goal, it might be smarter to skip that opportunity for now.

You also did not get into why you are applying to the schools you listed, I do think they all see quite a lot of start up related applicants, but if your list of schools isn’t set in stone, so to speak, maybe you should add a few more entrepreneurship focused schools to your list too? You can find a partial list of those here, for example:
https://aringo.com/mba-entrepreneurship-specialization/

Just a thought since I don’t know much about your profile otherwise, so it’s hard for me to say how likely you are to be admitted to the schools listed in your post.

Good luck no matter what you end up doing!
