This year, two teams from CUHK Business School participated in the competition. Both teams made it to the final, reaping the championship and first runner-up. Lin Kai-chun, a Year 1 student from Global Business Studies (GBS), also won the Best Debater Award.

EY Young Tax Professional 2023 (Hong Kong)
In the EY Young Tax Professional 2023 (Hong Kong) competition, PACC student Lam Hing-sum (Global Accounting, Year 3) won the championship in the local round and will represent Hong Kong in the national competition in the second half of 2023. This international competition aims to identify young talent with an interest in tax, supporting them in developing their professional skills and careers.

Lam Hing-sum spoke of his experience, ” This was my first competition. I want to thank my lecturer, Dr. YY Butt, for his teaching and guidance in preparing for the competition. I am proud of myself for taking on the challenge and pushing myself to grow and learn. It was incredible to put all the concepts and theories I have learned into practice.”

“Tax is a very specialised area to which accountants can add value,” Mr. Eric Leung, Co-Director of the PACC Programme and Senior Lecturer of the School of Accountancy, spoke of the importance of tax in accounting, “Tax is part of the law. In the simplest terms, it stipulates how much an entity or an individual needs to pay the government.”

The PACC programme offers four stream specialisations, one of which is the Global Tax and Governance (GTG) stream. The GTG stream aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills of various taxation systems worldwide and prepare them to provide professional advice to clients. Course topics range from China and international taxation to regulation and compliance in the financial markets.

Cultivating a Pipeline of Trustworthy Business Talent [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Cultivating a Pipeline of Trustworthy Business Talent
After earning his BSSc in Economics in 1985 at CUHK, Prof. Fung completed his PhD at the University of Western Ontario. He joined CUHK Business School in 1991 and has maintained a passion for academic research and teaching ever since. In 2018, he co-convened Innovation x Business @ CUHK, a tech-business-focused platform connecting students with consulting and academic research opportunities at renowned organisations. He is also the Executive Director of the Aviation Policy and Research Centre, where he has spent years researching and contributing recommendations to Hong Kong’s aviation and economic development.

Nurturing the Next Generation of Credible Business Talent
Prof. Fung has dedicated his life to educating the next generation, and many of his students look up to him. He is best known for his engaging teaching style and his use of real-life examples and current events to help students understand fundamental economic theories. He also encourages students to hone their presentation skills and to combine classroom learning with real-world examples in their group presentations.

More importantly, he motivates students to learn how to build trust with others, saying, “Mutual trust is the foundation of business, and it cannot be feigned. I’m always thinking about how I can inspire students to take risks and challenge themselves. They should also embrace failure and use it as a learning opportunity, adjusting their mindsets and becoming someone in whom others can put their trust.”

Uniting Teachers and Students through Fine Traditions
Prof. Fung maintains high expectations for his students. His profound passion for education has been shaped by CUHK’s unique setting, and it has only grown in depth over time: “What you learn from textbooks is more or less the same everywhere across the world. But CUHK’s collegiate system and hall life have created a distinct social network that brings professors and students from different classes and years together and fosters a sense of belonging to the university and colleges.”

Of all the experiences they gained at CUHK, many graduates say they treasure the friendships they built and the hall activities they participated in the most. Numerous learning opportunities from colleges complement the formal curriculum by helping students develop interpersonal skills, confidence and a sense of mission and responsibility. According to Prof. Fung, “This is a core value among CUHKers. Everyone is eager to carry on this fine tradition.”

In Constant Pursuit of Excellence and Growth Opportunities
CUHK’s expansive campus and beautiful vistas allow every CUHKer to find a corner to call their own. The same is true for Prof. Fung. During his nearly four decades on campus, which saw him transition from student to academic and take on various other roles, he also requires a place to lose himself in thought and restore his energy. “Lake Ad Excellentiam, outside Chung Chi Tang, is where I go for respite. It is here that I can reflect on my shortfallings and enjoy a moment of peace.”

Lake Ad Excellentiam is located in Chung Chi College. Its name in Chinese, the “lake of incomplete circle”, has a double meaning: literally, that the lake is not circular, with irregular shapes and curved corners; and figuratively, that “continued endeavour is necessary to achieve perfection”. This philosophical design is congruent with Prof. Fung’s unrelenting pursuit of excellence.

Prof. Fung sees CUHK’s six decades of business education as just the starting point on the highway of change. He believes that future business will be characterised by constant iteration. While IT and AI present challenges, they also open up limitless possibilities.

He advises students to keep broadening their horizons and not to limit their personal growth by committing to a career path too soon. Instead, they should embrace new challenges and learn to adapt their mindsets to live life with purpose and unlock more opportunities for development.

Deriving True Wealth from Making a Difference in Other Peoples Lives [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Deriving True Wealth from Making a Difference in Other People’s Lives
By founding the charity “Youth Arch Foundation”, training local youth and personally visiting Aids orphans in Mainland China, Norris exemplifies the concept of “influencing other people’s lives with her own”.

Changing Life’s Trajectory
Norris, who was dressed in a simple, white casual dress, has held key positions at various financial institutions in the United States, United Kingdom and Hong Kong over the last two decades, including Guggenheim Partners and HSBC. However, she did not exude the aloofness of a dominant leader; rather, she recounted one life story after another with a warm smile and a gentle but assertive voice.

Before her family relocated to Hong Kong from Xiamen when she was seven years old, Norris’s father had been a doctor and her mother a teacher. On moving to Hong Kong, her parents became factory workers, and they lived in a small sublet flat. This transformative life change taught Norris that nothing is certain in life and that she must work hard to secure a better future. When she was in Form 4, she received the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award. Norris didn’t attend prestigious schools like the other recipients, yet her unique affability earned her the nomination to lead the Hong Kong Outstanding Students’ Association. “People often say smart people are difficult to get along with,” she said. “Perhaps I lack that arrogance; I’ve always managed to make friends.”

Norris said she enjoys interacting with others, from which she learns to appreciate the strengths of others and acquire new knowledge.

Norris joked that she was a “gifted salesperson” who discovered her talent when she was young. During her first year at university, Norris took a summer job at IBM with a hope to finance her overseas exchange. She was put in charge of calling clients to promote the company’s products and services. In the span of a short summer holiday, she made sales worth tens of millions of dollars. Norris could have made a fortune if she had continued down the route of sales, but she refused to rest on her laurels: “It’s a waste of time doing what you are best at when you are young. If you want to be successful, you must learn a variety of skills. I always reflect on my weaknesses in order to make targeted improvements.”

As someone who is not proficient in maths, Norris deliberately studied various financial subjects to build up her competence. When she graduated from CUHK, she had already received several traineeship offers from investment banks and the HSBC Asset Management global programme. The former would immediately lead to a substantial salary and bonus, whereas the latter had only three quotas worldwide but required her to work in London, New York and Hong Kong, all of which came with their own set of uncertainties. At this daunting crossroads, Norris chose personal development over financial gain: “Going on exchanges in Mainland China and overseas allowed me to see my shortcomings and learn that there are always bigger fish in the sea. I was eager to visit new places, meet new people, learn new skills and broaden my international horizons.” Norris’s humble, inquisitive attitude led her around the world and propelled her to become a pioneer in alternative investment, generating massive profits for her companies while grooming future industry talent.

Making Effective Use of Money to Create Greater Impact
Throughout her decades-long career in financial investment, Norris has excelled at matching investors with projects. She has also devoted her resource allocation skills to charity work, helping a number of organisations secure resources for sustainable development and achieve greater impact with scarce money. When the founder of the Hong Kong Outstanding Students Award, Ms Doreen Leung, passed away in 2009, Norris established the Youth Arch Foundation to give back by promoting youth development and passing on the spirit of philanthropy.

“I firmly believe that giving is outstanding,” Norris shared.
All of this happened organically. Norris acknowledged that, in addition to being a recipient of philanthropy herself, family education played an important role: “My mum was always helping others. When she was a teacher, she used to invite students who didn’t have enough to eat to our home for meals. She would also pay for those who couldn’t afford their tuition.” Norris now teaches her two children the same. She recently took her ten-year-old son to visit an AIDS village on the Mainland. She witnessed his transformation as a result of the trip, learning to be grateful and willing to give: “He told me we should donate our clothes because he saw children in the AIDS village wearing the same clothes for two days.”

Norris believes that instilling the right values in future generations and training their minds can change not only the lives of children, but also the futures of entire families. She has gradually introduced the concept of money to her son as well: “It’s enough to earn as much as you need to maintain your desired standard of living, and a little bit more to meet unexpected needs. Of course, everyone’s ideal standard of living differs; the idea is to define it for yourself.”

Norris, who is currently a director of the Chi Heng Foundation, has been concerned about the situation of Mainland China’s AIDS villages for many years. She frequently takes Hong Kong outstanding students to visit the villages (pictured above). Recently, she visited one with her son to instil empathy in him from a young age.

Focusing on Shortfalls and Investing in the Future
Looking back at her time at CUHK, Norris was most grateful for the opportunity to travel abroad, which opened her eyes and spurred her academic and personal development. She maintained that young people should not only concentrate on what they do well. In this rapidly changing world, they should gain more experiences and challenge themselves. “We should set our sights on ‘what’s next’ rather than ‘what’s here’. Investing in the future is far more meaningful than achieving short-term gains.”

CUHK Business Schools Department of Decisions, Operations and Technolo [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: CUHK Business School’s Department of Decisions, Operations and Technology Renamed
Since the establishment of the department in 1993, the academic and business landscapes have changed significantly. As technology and data analytics continue to play an increasingly important role in business decision-making, the department has adapted its academic and research focus to meet the evolving needs of the industry, with majority of faculty members specialising in Operations Management (OM) and Information System Management (MIS), and a modest group of experts in Business Economics (BE).

In the new name, “Decisions, Operations and Technology”, “Operations” and “Technology” represent OM and MIS. “Decisions” covers not only BE members’ teaching and research expertise but also some of those in OM and MIS. By aligning its expertise with the latest trends and challenges in the business world, DOT is well-positioned to generate meaningful insights and nurture competent business leaders ready for the future.

Professor Sean Zhou, Chairman of the Department of Decisions, Operations and Technology, explained, “We believe the initiative will convey a clearer message about our renewed teaching and research focus. We will continue to enhance our research and programme curriculum by integrating elements of technology, innovation and analytics. With our strengths in research and education, we hope to collaborate with relevant research institutions, business partners and government organisations and contribute to pivotal decisions in business and society.”

Advancing Teaching Excellence to Keep the Legacy Flame Alive [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Advancing Teaching Excellence to Keep the Legacy Flame Alive
Dr Yuen began his career in the banking industry after graduating from CUHK. Before long, however, he discovered that his true calling lay elsewhere. He returned to CUHK to pursue an MPhil in Business Economics, followed by a PhD in Transport Economics at the University of British Columbia. He subsequently accepted a teaching position at CUHK Business School, catalysing his career in academia.

Looking back at his studies at CUHK, Dr Yuen was grateful to have met many outstanding scholars. Their passion for teaching inspired him to follow in their footsteps, do his part to preserve the School’s humanistic spirit and put his educational philosophy into practice.

“Business knowledge is a tool, not only for making money, but also for enabling students to create value for themselves and help society become a better place.”

Perpetual Participation in the Educational Marathon
A teacher for 15 years, Dr Yuen has served in a variety of capacities to promote curriculum development, taking the unique business education of CUHK to the next level. He has been the Academic Director of MBA Programmes, Assistant Dean (Undergraduate Studies) and Co-director of the Integrated BBA Programme. Recently, he also took up the role of Director of Executive MBA Programme. As an enthusiastic educator, this “elder brother” of CUHK Business School cares deeply for his students and often takes the time to share his insight on career development, as well as his thoughts on life.

“The Business School fosters an environment in which professors and students are encouraged to interact with one another. In addition to gaining professional knowledge from faculty members, students often develop relationships with their professors as mentors and friends.”

Curriculum and pedagogy should evolve in tandem with society. Dr Yuen attaches great importance to the connection shared by the knowledge students gain and its practical applications. For this reason, his classes are dynamic and diverse. He combines basic theories and current affairs to help students more thoroughly understand how academic principles apply in the real world, which magnifies their motivation to learn. He has twice received CUHK’s Vice-Chancellor’s Exemplary Teaching Award in recognition of his unique and innovative teaching style.

Dr Yuen is equally active and enthusiastic outside of the classroom. Currently the Director of Policy and Knowledge Transfer at CUHK’s Aviation Policy and Research Centre, he is frequently interviewed by the media on Hong Kong’s aviation industry and global macroeconomics . A few years ago, he co-convened Innovation x Business @ CUHK with Prof. Michael Fung, also from the Department of Decisions, Operations and Technology. This tech-and-business-focused platform connects students with consulting and academic research opportunities at renowned organisations.

Seizing Opportunity When Business and Technology Meet
Oftentimes, the real world moves faster than – and charges farther ahead of – the measured pace of academia. In recent years, the hotly discussed AI has ushered in revolutionary changes and presented numerous industries with novel challenges. In the face of this shifting landscape, Dr Yuen believes both teaching and learning should focus primarily on the present while keeping an eye on the future that is soon to unfold. He hopes younger generations will embrace new technology with open minds and consider how it might generate greater value for themselves and for society.

“The relationship between technology and humanity has never been competitive; it’s complementary. The higher an enterprise’s level of success and the more resources it controls, the greater its social responsibility. It’s therefore critical for Business School students to understand the value and possibilities that technology can present to business.”

Dr Yuen advises CUHKers to seize every opportunity and not to shy away from challenges, and always bear in mind the School’s humanistic spirit.

“The mountainous roads of CUHK can be challenging to navigate. However, every step represents an opportunity for reflection and personal growth. This shared pursuit of excellence has fostered the strong emotional bond that exists among CUHKers and shaped the distinctive culture of CUHK Business School.”

Prof. Michael Fung (right) of the Department of Decisions, Operations and Technology was Dr Yuen’s professor. After becoming a lecturer himself, Dr Yuen taught Sean Tam (centre) (International Business and Chinese Enterprise 2021). Despite attending CUHK at different times, they all connected at CUHK Business School, bonding over their special cross-generational student-teacher relationships.

CUHK Business School Students Explore Japanese Culture and Business Pr [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: CUHK Business School Students Explore Japanese Culture and Business Practice on Study Trip
The pandemic has limited opportunities for overseas exchange in the past few years, making this study trip the first overseas learning experience for many students. During the trip, the students participated in a seminar on Digital Analytics and Big Data in Asia hosted by the NUCB Business School in Nagoya. They also visited various companies such as Daikin, Asahi Forge and Alpen Group to witness how corporations use technology and implement sustainable development goals. Besides, the students also paid a visit to the Start-up Division of the Aichi Prefectural Government in Nagoya, learning how the Japanese government discovers, attracts and nurtures startups and promotes innovation.

The trip provided an opportunity for students to exchange thoughts with people at the organisations they visited. Before the trip, the students researched some major business issues in Hong Kong and Japan, and made a presentation on entrepreneurship and the start-up ecosystem in Hong Kong as part of their pre-trip assignment. They also had a chance to mingle with local and international students studying at Kobe University to enrich their cross-cultural learning.

Being part of the course requirement for the Global Accounting stream of PACC Programme, the study trip blends theoretical knowledge with real-world exposure, inspiring critical thinking and improving interpersonal skills. Participating students are subsidised through the stream admission scholarship donated by alumni, industry leaders as well as professional firms.

One of the students, Zoe Lee (PACC, Global Accounting Stream, Year 4) said, “The pandemic limited our chances to go for an overseas exchange. This study trip is my first overseas learning experience in my tertiary education. It helped develop my cross-cultural perspectives.”

Another student, Lanka Yu (PACC, Global Accounting Stream, Year 2) said, added, “The learning activity stimulates my reflection on the power of data in solving business issues and how businesses should use data ethically.”

Unleashing New Frontiers from Legacy Roots [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: Unleashing New Frontiers from Legacy Roots
Throughout his illustrious career at these historic brands, Simon has relished the opportunity to delve into their rich heritage. He finds exhilarating delight in uncovering their historical roots and has an innate ability to create compelling marketing scenarios that are deeply ingrained in a company’s culture, effectively connecting with consumers on a profound level. “By thoroughly exploring a brand’s heritage, we will be able to broaden its growth horizon or enhance its intrinsic value by thoroughly exploring its heritage. We can leverage a brand’s legacy, infusing it with innovation and refining its cultural essence to resonate with modern consumers.”

Finding Fascination in the Great Depths
Similar to the century-old brands he is affiliated with, Simon has consistently expanded his knowledge and expertise. Although his background encompasses the arts and sciences, he deliberately pursued a major in business to cultivate his mathematical acumen and logical thinking. In addition, he pursued a minor in journalism and communication, and even worked as a news anchor, to broaden his insights across diverse fields. Perhaps driven by the belief that there is always more to uncover, Simon has remained curious about the enduring business wisdom of brands with a century of excellence. “If you try to understand a company by ‘finding its roots’, you’ll discover a treasure trove of exemplary cultures worthy of admiration and respect. These often hold the secrets to a brand’s longevity.”

In the few months since joining Nestlé, Simon has experienced a sense of fulfilment and excitement every day. He has been fully engaged in learning and adapting to the culture of the world’s largest food and beverage company, while also focusing on the brand’s growth and connection with consumers. Despite his considerable experience in the industry, he admitted that the learning curve has been steep. The amount of knowledge he has absorbed in these few months rivals what he might have learnt over years at multiple companies. Nevertheless, he has found this journey fascinating. “Nestlé has a plethora of brands and products, each with its own unique DNA and consumer base – from infants, teenagers and adults to the elderly and even pets – as well as their distinct marketing strategies.” He has accompanied frontline staff as they delivered ice cream, fresh milk and soybean products to various retail outlets. This allowed him to learn about the hard work of his colleagues and, at the same time, observe and contemplate ways to optimise processes and operations.

Simon acknowledged that despite the seemingly overwhelming workload, he never experienced fatigue. On the contrary, he exuded enthusiasm when discussing his work, stating, “I genuinely enjoy the challenges at work. In a way, I consider myself fortunate because my work matches my interests, and it feels like ‘paid to play’. To be exact, we should ‘play to win’. We aim to create and match consumption scenes for our products and services, captivating consumers’ attention while also adding social value and contributing to society.”

Simon finds immense satisfaction in every aspect of his work, from conceiving ideas from scratch, planning, implementing to reaping the rewards. He revealed that in his younger days, he preferred to handle things alone. However, with time, he realised that there are limits to the remarkable and sustainable results that one person can achieve. Now that he is in charge of the whole company, he recognises the crucial importance of integrating the frontline and the back end to ensure the business operates more efficiently.

Simon has been working at Nestlé for a few months. Despite the heavy workload, he was enjoying it all

Putting Well-Honed Skills into Action
The longer a brand exists, the more it grapples with balancing tradition and innovation. Simon has a distinctive perspective on this matter: “Innovation serves as a means to preserve a brand’s traditions, ensuring that its ‘roots’ endure across generations. Even as advanced machinery and modern manufacturing techniques replace traditional methods, the brand’s culture and quality remain steadfast. The core values of the brand, such as growth talent and respect for diversity, nurturing future generations and commitment to food safety and compliance, will always shine through innovation.”

In the current landscape of the F&B sector and even the entire retail industry, speed is the primary challenge. Simon believes that, with the rise of e-commerce and the emergence of “interest e-commerce,” consumers now have access to markets all around the world, making it essential for brands to maintain customer loyalty in order to stay competitive. Having honed his skills in the industry for decades, Simon sees this as the time to showcase his abilities. He excels at identifying market trends, creating more engaging scenarios for consumers, expanding product development and extending the brand’s reach. He aims to continue diversifying products across new media platforms to increase the brand’s value and relevance.

Simon emphasised that F&B products should not be limited to a single form. For example, Nestlé’s KitKat® has been transformed into an ice cream while the traditional product packaging has been switched to a recyclable paper wrapper, enabling the brand to achieve sustainable development and improve its competitiveness.

“Innovation serves as a means to preserve a brand’s traditions, ensuring that its ‘values and culture’ endure in the tides of time,” Simon shared.
Learning Ability Fosters Competitiveness
Simon’s deep understanding and appreciation of CUHK’s motto, “Through learning and temperance to virtue”, is evident in both his personal pursuits and professional development. The diverse range of subjects he explored during his undergraduate studies has significantly contributed to his career growth. “Knowledge from various fields, such as accounting, statistics and operations management, is interconnected. By integrating and applying this knowledge in practical ways, one can maximise their understanding and capabilities.”

Looking ahead, Simon recognised that the “ability to learn” will be a crucial competitive advantage for leaders. He has been actively researching artificial intelligence trends and contemplating ways to smarten up the food manufacturing industry. He encouraged students to maintain a mindset of continuous learning even after graduation, adopting an “empty-cup mentality”. According to him, “academic achievements are valuable but they are bygone. What’s crucial in the present moment is the ability to learn and continuously improve. Building personal potential requires constantly deepening one’s knowledge through learning, which allows others to see the possibilities within oneself.”

Based on his own experiences, Simon advised his fellow alumni to remain composed and positive when facing challenges. He advocated for resilience, because “any difficulty or hardship will eventually pass.”

Joining CUHK Business School with a full scholarship, Simon embraced opportunities to acquire knowledge from various disciplines

As a journalism minor in university, Simon worked as a TV news anchor to challenge himself

A New Generation Perpetuating Business Management Excellence with a Hu [#permalink]
FROM CUHK: A New Generation Perpetuating Business Management Excellence with a Humanistic Spirit
For 60 years, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) Business School has provided students with a rich, pluralistic learning environment, enabling them to discover themselves, broaden their global perspectives and apply their knowledge in the real world. It has produced generations of exceptional leaders who have helped shape the global business landscape. More than that, CUHK’s distinctive college culture and close teacher-student relationships have fostered a sense of belonging and mission in its alumni, consistently inspiring new members to take up and pass the baton.

Mentors and Friends United in Roots and Spirits
Sean Tam (International Business and Chinese Enterprise 2021) is a member of CUHK Business School’s new generation. After graduation, he started working at a globally renowned technology company, armed with the knowledge and wisdom that the Business School has amassed over decades. Like those who came before him, Sean has been profoundly inspired by exemplary professors, many of whom are outstanding CUHK alumni themselves, including Professor Michael Fung (BSSc in Economics 1985) and Senior Lecturer Dr Andrew Yuen (MPhil in Business Economics 2003, Integrated BBA 1999) of the Department of Decisions, Operations and Technology.

Dr Andrew Yuen (left), Sean Tam (centre) and Professor Michael Fung (right).

Sean is grateful to his seniors and mentors for their patient teaching. He has formed close relationships with them. “I recall the professors deliberating over how to bring students closer together by providing more experiential learning and interactive opportunities. We have never had a generation gap, and our bond has surpassed that of mere friends.”

Stepping Out of the Classroom to See the World
Outside of the classroom, CUHK Business School’s extensive resources and networks provide students with numerous opportunities to engage in continuous learning and new experiences. “Soon after I started my undergraduate studies at the Business School, I had the opportunity to go on a study trip to Denmark with my professors. As a young adult, being able to venture outside of Hong Kong and broaden my horizons was a transformative journey that I will cherish and benefit from for the rest of my life.”

Sean actively participated in external competitions. In 2019, he and several classmates competed in the Central European Case Competition in Budapest, Hungary. They clinched the championship after solving two complex business strategy cases for Central European companies, defeating other teams from eight countries.

Yet, regardless of how far he goes, Sean will always hold dear to the humanistic spirit CUHK has instilled in him. He stated that the school has not only emphasised imparting business knowledge, but also taught students to embrace humanistic philosophy and multi-perspective thinking. These are admirable qualities that graduates from different generations share and continue to pass down.

The Greatest Support for Learning and for Life
Like many other Business School alumni, Sean returns to campus regularly to share his learning and outreach experiences with current students. He still greatly enjoys his me-time on campus: “While sitting in the same seat, sipping the same oat-milk coffee and reminiscing the good times, I see many students exploring the depths of knowledge and engaging in deep discussions. This also prompts me to contemplate life’s challenges and meanings.”

“CUHK Business School is my greatest source of support. Only here can I keep the belief of ‘success begins with creation’ alive.” The school’s 60-year legacy is built not only on the accomplishments of individual scholars or students, but also on the collective contributions of generations of educators, alumni and students who pass on their knowledge, wisdom and values from one era to the next.
