FROM CUHK: Elevating Business Education with Rigour, Relevance and Tireless Dedication
Dedicated to a Career in Education
Prof. Lee, who grew up in Macau, chose The Chinese University of Hong Kong’s (CUHK) Faculty of Commerce at United College for his undergraduate studies in 1963. Even as a student, he had already set his sights on contributing to Hong Kong’s business development and the continuous transformation of its industry. When he completed his undergraduate studies, Prof. Lee enrolled in the newly established Master of Business Administration programme.

After receiving his master’s degree in 1969, Prof. Lee turned down a lucrative business offer and worked as an assistant lecturer at Chung Chi College and began his lifelong career in education. His dedication and persistence in academic research soon earned him study leave and a doctoral fellowship from the United Board for Christian Higher Education in Asia, arranged via Chung Chi College. The fellowship allowed him to pursue a PhD in Marketing at Northwestern University in the United States. When he returned to Hong Kong, he continued to teach at CUHK’s Department of Marketing, progressing from assistant lecturer to professor of marketing. Furthermore, Prof. Lee became Dean of Business Administration (1993-1999).

Integrate Theory with Practice
Prof. Lee believes that “a clear and authentic vision can transform the world”.

Prof. Lee and his colleagues at CUHK Business School share a commitment to a business philosophy that integrates theory with practice and they are rooted in Chinese culture. Through their efforts, a succession of business elites has been nurtured and contributed to the development of China and the rest of the world.

According to Prof. Lee, a clear and authentic vision often has the power to transform the world, as demonstrated repeatedly throughout history. “Our former vice-chancellor, Prof. Charles Kao, discovered that optical fibre was the best medium for data transmission, and his invention has benefited the entire world. Zheng Guanying, realising that the decline of the late Qing Dynasty was due to a business slump, proposed a government-supervised, merchant-managed enterprise model that became a remedial solution for the country. Japan’s Fukuzawa Yukichi recognised the importance of business and business education. He founded Keio University, introduced Western economics and contributed to the Meiji Restoration.”

Prof. Lee has been invited to teach in executive programmes and serve as a consultant for organisations, including the World Bank, various financial, tourism, retail, advertising, chemical enterprises and industry associations. As he explained, “Business education emphasises the integration of theory and practice. I’m constantly interacting with business leaders and when appropriate providing consultation services to them. My goal is to ensure that our education is both rigorous and relevant.”

Steer a Steady Course for Hotel and Tourism Management Education
Prof. Lee’s foresight of Hong Kong’s need for economic transformation led him to recognise the importance of the tourism and related industries well before the city’s handover. As one of the most popular tourist destinations in Asia, Hong Kong was poised to benefit from the growing connection with Mainland China, opening of Chek Lap Kok Airport and booming of the aviation industry. In 1998, the School of Hotel and Tourism Management was established to provide world-class business management programmes focused on tourism and the service industries. Its mission is to meet the needs of the flourishing tourism industry in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Asia and around the world.

As the Dean of Business Administration at the time, Prof. Lee was a driving force behind CUHK’s Teaching Hotel Project, which was created to establish a teaching hotel and a teaching building for the School of Hotel and Tourism Management (SHTM). He led a delegation to the Cornell School of Hotel Administration to exchange ideas and share experiences. In 2001-2012, he was appointed director of the SHTM, where he spearheaded the school’s efforts to cultivate tourism management professionals who are conversant with both business theory and practice and proficient in regional market cultures and international visitor needs.

The teaching hotel, the Hyatt Regency Hong Kong, Sha Tin, and the teaching building, named the Cheng Yu Tung Building, opened in 2011. Since then, they have provided state-of-the-art internship, teaching and research facilities for the School of Hotel and Tourism Management, CUHK Business School and other research institutes of the university. The Project launched a new chapter of hotel and tourism management education in Hong Kong.

Envision a Future Powered by Advanced Business Education
With China’s rapid economic growth in recent decades, the mainland’s and Hong Kong’s business and management prowess has taken the lead in Asia and continues to have a positive impact on the rest of the world.

“By the time we celebrate our 100th anniversary, I expect CUHK Business School to be on a par with the world’s most advanced business schools.” Having devoted his life to the research and development of business education, Prof. Lee hopes that CUHK Business School will continue to play a pivotal role in the development of business education in Mainland China and Hong Kong.

Prof. Lee (right) has nurtured generations of outstanding leaders over the years, including Peter Hung (left, BBA in Marketing 1980), President and Chief Representative of Forbes Global Holdings.

FROM CUHK: CUHK Business School Students Crowned Champion in CFA Institute Research Challenge – Hong Kong Local Final 2022-23
Hosted by CFA Society Hong Kong, the annual competition offers university students hands-on mentoring and intensive training in company financial analysis. Working in teams, participating students took the role of research analysts and were assessed based on their ability to evaluate a stock, compose a research report, and present their recommendations.

This year, CUHK team clinched the title of the championship with their in-depth equity report on Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited and outstanding presentation among the six finalist teams. The team comprises five students from diverse disciplines, including Integrated BBA (IBBA), Global Economics and Finance (GLEF), Professional Accountancy (PACC), Economics (ECON) and Electronic Engineering (ELEG), which contributed to their well-rounded analysis.

The team attributed their success to humility, “We should stay humble to our teammates, competitors, and mentors. Winning is not the most important part of the competition; rather, it’s about learning and growing as individuals and as a team.” They also credited their achievement to the exceptional guidance from their mentor Mr William Leung and faculty advisor Dr Edwin Mok, who provided valuable insights and suggestions throughout the competition.

FROM CUHK: Soaring High in Aviation Management
“Appreciating the magnificent scenery from the skies is an unforgettable experience,” he said. “The perspectives I gained from various fields of aviation management have also enabled me to cruise the altitudes of senior management and appreciate the beauty of the big picture.”

Opening His Eyes to the World
Augustus’s involvement with the aviation industry began at a young age. His father used to work at the Hong Kong Aircraft Engineering Company Limited (HAECO). One year, Augustus joined an aircraft tour when he followed his father to a company Christmas party held at Kai Tak Airport. As he stepped into the cabin, Augustus was captivated by what he saw. Combined with his love of travel, he joined Cathay Pacific Airways as a management trainee after graduation, embarking on a lifelong journey in the skies.

Almost every fresh graduate would love to have a job that allows them to travel and explore the world, and Augustus was no exception. He explained that he was positioned to various departments, in Hong Kong and abroad, and there were plenty of business travels. Apart from gaining diverse work experiences, he also got the chance to experience different cultures. All of these fulfilled his desire to explore the world. For example, when he worked in the Traffic Department, he learnt about the policies and operations of different airports, and while stationed in countries such as Japan and Malaysia he was able to understand their national policies and situations more thoroughly. These enlightening experiences allowed him to develop his international perspectives and grasp the secrets to integrating and applying his experiences and knowledge with agility. “Aviation industry connects the world, and it is inextricably linked to global political and economic situations. While basic knowledge and understanding are important, I prefer to take a panoramic view and examine the big picture objectively and calmly to stay ahead and seize opportunities.”

Augustus became a Director at John Swire & Sons (H.K.) Limited this year and he hopes to help the company soar to new heights with his experience and network

Steering Through Downturns with an Eye on the Horizon
Augustus has witnessed a slew of challenges over four decades: the oil crisis, the 9/11 attacks, SARS, to name a few. According to him, the recent pandemic has been the most unforgettable of all. He pointed out that Hong Kong International Airport used to handle around 200,000 passengers per day, but the figure plummeted to several hundred by April 2020. Aviation industry almost came to a standstill due to border closures and quarantine measures. “In the early stage, we expected the pandemic to follow a similar trajectory to SARS and would end in about six months, we already had a response plan in place. No one would have expected that the pandemic would drag on, our passenger traffic-driven revenue took a nosedive to less than 1% of pre-pandemic level, putting tremendous strain on our operations.”

Augustus’s macro perspectives not only helped him remain calm during these trying times, but also provided guidance and confidence to his team. “If you could step back from a challenge and assess the situation with broader perspectives, you would find that our edges have not changed: our team is the best among global airlines, Hong Kong continues to enjoy extraordinary strengths as an international financial centre and aviation hub, and we have the strong backing of the Chinese Mainland and access to more than 80 million potential customers in the Greater Bay Area. Without a doubt, the prospects of aviation industry following the pandemic are promising.” He was grateful for his team’s shared vision, collaboration and resilience over the past three years. As the pandemic fades and travel resumes, a turning point has finally arrived.

According to Augustus, his management and working style were deeply influenced by his family. His father was trained by apprenticeship and always went above and beyond to complete his tasks. Augustus looks up to his father as a role model and also strives to give his all in everything he does. His grandmother’s teaching, “Don’t do unto others what you don’t want done unto you”, has also helped him develop empathy and, with time and experience, overcome his shyness. Through communication and collaboration, he has led his team to continuous progress.

As he looks to the future, Augustus hopes his experience and network can help the company soar to new heights, especially in areas such as corporate relations and stakeholder management, and play his part to contribute to the development of Hong Kong and the Chinese Mainland.

“In times of adversity, leaders must take a step back, look at the big picture and communicate effectively in order to help their teams align on a common macro perspective,” Augustus shared.
Adding Wind Beneath a Leader’s Wings Through Communication and Negotiation
Augustus pinpoints that the interpersonal skills he learnt at CUHK Business School laid a solid foundation for his subsequent career development. He is grateful for the exchange experience he gained through AIESEC, which provided him with the invaluable opportunity to study and work in Yugoslavia back then and learn to work and interact with people from diverse cultural backgrounds. He encouraged Business School students to cherish the opportunity to work on group projects, improve their communication and negotiation skills and learn to reach a consensus with those who hold opposing views.

As someone who started his career as a management trainee, Augustus advised students who want to follow in his footsteps to have a broad understanding of international affairs and expand their knowledge. “Having fundamental business knowledge and skills is just the start. What is most important is to develop a macro perspective and a distinct point of view, as these are essential for standing out in the competitive business world.”

FROM CUHK: Achieving Excellence across the World and into the Future
Developing Self-Discipline and Striving for Greatness
A Hong Kong native, Peter was a prominent student in his years of study at CUHK. Not only did he graduate with first-class honours, but he also served as president of the Business Administration Society of Chung Chi College and captain of the CUHK table tennis team. “Playing table tennis requires consistent dedication and persistent practice, which is essential for developing self-discipline,” said Peter. Whether expanding one’s intellect in the classroom or enjoying the exertion of extracurricular activities, the key is endlessly endeavouring to be at one’s best when given the opportunity to stand out.

With this attitude, Peter has been able to shine on the international stage. He followed his graduation from CUHK with further education and then forged a remarkable career in the United States, working in diverse cultures and divergent business environments for more than 25 years. When a Hong Kong-based investment group acquired Forbes, Peter was appointed its senior executive. His distinct cultural background, extensive work experience and substantial management knowledge gained at CUHK Business School have enabled him to usher his teams to success and serve as a critical, effective bridge builder.

Forbes magazine is well-known for its many legendary lists, including the highly regarded “Forbes 30 Under 30” list. This illustrious list has honoured a number of Business School alumni over the years, showcasing their exceptional entrepreneurial and leadership acumen in the international business sphere. For Peter, this is particularly pleasing. Despite his demanding schedule, he is dedicated to sharing his corporate management expertise with young alumni whenever possible.

Fusing the Best of East and West to Connect the World
Peter knows that the strength of the Business School’s Chinese cultural foundation—as well as its close connections to the international community—empower students with distinctive capabilities. Graduates enjoy significant advantages in Greater China, the Asia-Pacific region and across the globe. As Peter put it, “Our students can use their unique cultural understanding to represent international companies in China as well as Chinese companies throughout the rest of the world.”

Peter was a member of CUHK’s inaugural Global Alumni Advisory Board and currently sits on the School of Hotel and Tourism Management’s Advisory Committee. He helps CUHK offer ample opportunities for its students to expand their global perspectives.

“Learn to Learn”—the Key to Agility in a Dynamic Landscape
When it comes to nurturing new generations, Peter encourages students to “learn to learn”. “The world is constantly changing, so it’s incumbent upon us to stay in step by continually upgrading ourselves. The ‘great learning’ of university encourages people to cultivate their curiosity, keep exploring the world and never stop striving for excellence. These qualities are crucial for the advancement of humanity and society as a whole.”

Peter remembered taking Prof. Kam-hon Lee’s Marketing Theory course at CUHK Business School. “The course inspired me to break free from the traditional mindset. I learnt to focus less on surface context and concentrate more on the covert thought process taking place behind-the-scenes of an issue. This approach enables me to formulate a framework for any potential problem and overcome obstacles with agility.”

Prof. Kam-hon Lee, Emeritus Professor of Marketing of CUHK Business School (Left) and Peter Hung, President, Licensing and Branded Ventures of Forbes Global Media Holdings (right)

Cross-Disciplinary Understanding for Cross-Dimensional Capabilities
In the modern world, international business environments are regularly disrupted by emergent technology. For this reason, Peter knows it is not only necessary for students to cement a solid foundation of business knowledge, but also to develop a solid understanding of different disciplines. The analytical skills and independent thinking ability they obtain will help them creatively bypass barriers and unlock new business prospects. As Peter recommended, “We should adopt the Blue Ocean Strategy and establish fresh mindsets.”

Peter was gratified to see CUHK Business School join forces with other faculties and establish corporate collaborations to instil cross-disciplinary learning on campus. This will help students properly prepare for the challenges and changes yet to come in humanity’s fast-approaching future.

He was well-loved for his humour and ability to impersonate others’ voices. Since the 1950s, he appeared in more than 150 famous comedies and films which won him the moniker “King of Comedy”.

Prof. Lin Zhou, Dean of CUHK Business School, expresses his appreciation and gratitude to Mr. Ng for his remarkable generosity. By establishing the scholarship, Mr. Ng has demonstrated his commitment to supporting his junior brothers and sisters from the MBA Programme, promoting education and empowering the next generation of leaders. In 2015, Mr. Ng also made a donation to New Asia College of CUHK and sponsored the casting of a commemorative bronze bust of his beloved Dr. Pikai Tchang.

FROM CUHK: Unrelenting Quest for New Knowledge Powers Peter Yan’s 40-year Journey in the IT Industry
While business administration is quite common in today’s university education, it was still an emerging discipline in the 1980’s. “Even though the entry requirements were quite tough back then, I had made up my mind to study business administration. It encompasses an array of aspects with promising potential for future development. My gut feeling was that I could learn a lot from marketing, which was novel and challenging,” Peter recalls the various factors leading to his decision to pursue marketing for his undergraduate studies. “My family did not have many comments on my choice of subject, but my teachers and friends encouraged me to opt for something interesting and challenging that would broaden my horizons. Looking back, I could not thank them enough for the invaluable suggestions which paves the way for me.”

In recollecting his time at CUHK, Peter found the precious bonds with his classmates the most memorable. “Being young and like-minded, we continuously inspire each other. An unforgettable highlight was founding the Society of Business Administration. It was not an easy task to build the executive committee, but I thoroughly enjoyed making friends and networking, learning new skills and developing teamwork. We were so lucky to be successfully elected. During our tenure, the team injected fresh ideas like the exchange programme. I grasped the opportunity to go on an exchange to Sweden for four months, where I conducted research into marketing and promotions. It was eye-opening to experience the Nordic way of life, which is very different to that in Hong Kong, and to visit other parts of Europe. Although we have graduated a long time ago, the marketing classmates still meet up at least once a year.”

Peter (back row, third from left) has fond memories of forming the executive council of the Society of Business Administration.

Hostel life is another instrumental part of one’s university journey. “Due to limited residential facilities, the students who were actively engaged in organising activities were normally allotted a place for only one year out of the four years in university. The situation for other students was even worse,” he reminiscences. “I had a splendid time during my year in the student residences; but the three other years when I boarded ‘illegally’ were equally, if not more interesting! After working on activities until late, I would stay in the hostel with friends, enjoy the sweet soup, star-gazing and chat the night away…those were happy and unforgettable times.”

The marketing classmates still meet regularly, a testimony to the great bond that they share for 40 years.

The Summer Job That Inspired A Career
Upon graduating with a marketing degree, Peter began involved in the IT industry in different capacities and never looked back. This first step in his decorated career began with a summer job at a computer shop. “Personal computers were not so common at that time. My summer job has helped me to appreciate the amount of work that a desktop computer could do with relevant software applications. I can still vividly recall building my first computer using motherboards and other parts that were readily available at the shopping malls in Sham Shui Po, and following the instructions. This may give a false impression that it is very hi-tech. This experience cultivated my deep interest in IT. While I was lucky to be offered jobs in management, banking and the financial sectors, I felt like I am most interested in technologies.”

Peter joined Accenture as a consultant, where he learned invaluable lessons that supported his career with various jobs in reputable firms like Tradelink, Computer and Technologies Holdings Limited, and SUNeVision, before eventually landing his current role as Chief Executive Officer of Cyberport. All of these roles are closely related to new and innovative technologies.

“The tech scene 30 years ago is very different to that of today. If we want to see a movie 30 years ago, for example, we have to physically visit the cinemas to get tickets. Nowadays, streaming platforms enable mini-cinema experiences in the comfort of our living rooms. Technologies will continue to make our lives even better.”

Senior citizens enjoy a fresh experience at the eSports experience day at Cyberport.

Keep Up Or Fall Behind
With his solid background, however, Peter understands how challenging the IT industry is – whether it was 30 years ago or today. “Change in the only constant. In technologies, past experiences may become the excess baggage that holds you back. If you rely too much on previous experiences in decision making, you are at risk of becoming irrelevant. When I first began in the industry, solutions were relatively simple. A proficiency in some technical skills may already be sufficient for 8 to 10 years. But in today’s fast-pace environment, advancements are more diversified and more rapid. We hear of game-changing innovations around every three years. It is vital to keep an open mind and always look out for the next big thing, so as to avoid becoming obsolete.”

How does Peter find the time to learn, amid his public duties and a packed schedule? “It is powered by interest. When you learn things of interest, the process is enjoyable and it does not feel like a chore,” he explains. “Everyone in the world gets 24 hours in a day. In order to achieve more, you could either sacrifice your sleep or manage your waking hours. In this regard, discipline and habits are most important. When you make the greatest impact in the most efficient manner, you can squeeze out spare time to gain new knowledge.”

In addition to staying abreast with the latest trends, Peter has been taking his aspirations to another level. “I had been involved in helping enterprises optimise their return on investment prior to joining Cyberport in 2018. To certain extent, Cyberport could be considered as a business operation because it is self-funded and requires vigorous management. At this stage in my career, however, it is more meaningful to nurture a spirit of innovation in Hong Kong and facilitate aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly young people, to achieve success. I have gained so much from the tech industry in Hong Kong, how can I return the favour and contribute to society? This is my primary goal when I took up my job at Cyberport.”

An advocate for social services, Peter has invited over 280 students and parents to the movies and a tour of Cyberport.

Since 2011, Cyberport had put in place the Shenzhen-Hong Kong Young Entrepreneur Programme. This was upgraded to the Cyberport Greater Bay Area Young Entrepreneurship Programme in 2018 at Peter’s initiation. “The initiative aims to promote cultural and knowledge exchange among young people in Hong Kong and the burgeoning Greater Bay Area. Most importantly, it is a platform for them to expand their network which would be of great assistance in their future,” explains Peter. “I always tell the young people there are only two possible outcomes of starting a business – success, or it has not yet met the expected results. There is no failure. Irrespective of the results, the process is a unique way of learning about themselves as the entrepreneur must assume full responsibility of the business, often without fallbacks. If they eventually take up employment in the future, their willingness to explore ingenuous ideas would prove to be an asset in the job market. The entrepreneurship experience will always be fruitful.”

Success But No Failure, The Only Outcome in Entrepreneurship

In addition to incubating young entrepreneurs, Cyberport also partners with the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau on the Youth Start-up Internship Programme. Peter is photographed with Miss Alice Mak, Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs.

In comparing young people from Hong Kong and the Mainland, Peter believes they have different strengths and advantages. “As Hong Kong is a metropolis, local youths are blessed with stronger international exposure. With more diversity in our daily encounters, it is easier to adapt in other parts of the world. Lastly, Hong Kong is more economically developed, which gives our youth more capacity to chase their dreams. Meanwhile, young people from the Mainland takes note of these differences, which is a driving force behind their yearning for change. They show greater curiosity and thirst for new knowledge, as well as a greater drive for success. The enormous internal market presents lucrative opportunities. This is also one of their advantages.”

Epilogue: A Goal of Running and Life
A sports enthusiast, Peter has developed a keen interest in distance running in recent years. “In addition to the benefits for my physical health, running also trains my mind to overcome obstacles. Regular runners would certainly have heard comments like, ‘you’ve done enough for a day, don’t push too hard’, or ‘why do you bother training at an old age?’. To me, every time I brush aside these obstructions and achieve my training goals, I get a great sense of accomplishment. This is very similar to my philosophy in life, and the reason why I enjoy distance running.”

FROM CUHK: Enlightened by the Humanistic Spirit and the Limitless Possibility of Business
Giving Women a Voice through Photography
“I was raised by my grandmother who gave up her education at a young age to take care of her siblings. She inspired me and I am very grateful for the good education I received.”

During her general education classes at CUHK, Bonnie was exposed to issues concerning nature, humanity and philosophy. As she explained, “When I was at CUHK Business School, I had the chance to participate in research and explore subjects from a variety of disciplines. I learnt about women’s rights in the “History of Women in Modern China” class, and I realised there was so much more we could do to promote gender equality in different parts of the world.”

Bonnie was later introduced to the concept of social enterprise in the United States. While travelling the globe, she met women from all walks of life and was deeply moved by their stories. Once when she was taking photos with four young women in Turkey, she began to wonder if photography could change women’s lives, and the idea for Lensational was born.

By collecting second-hand cameras and collaborating with photographers internationally, Lensational is able to provide equipment and photography training to women around the world, including Hong Kong’s foreign domestic helpers. Outstanding works by these women are sold on online platforms or exhibited to generate income for the women. Some of the photographers who have taken part have gone on to become full-time freelancers and have started new lives in other countries. “Our goal is to elevate the voices of women through photography and storytelling, empowering them to break free from their circumstances and constraints,” Bonnie added.

Humanistic Education Fosters Innovative Business Perspectives
While many business students dream of flexing their muscles in the business world and amassing fame and fortune, Bonnie is determined to use her business knowledge to benefit humanity. She wants to help underrepresented women change the trajectory of their lives.

“What distinguishes CUHK Business School is its value-based education. It broadens our perspectives, prepares us for our post-graduation life journeys and inspires us to reimagine the possibilities of business. We engaged ‘In Dialogue with Nature’ and participated ‘In Dialogue with Humanity’; we were taught to bring social and environmental issues into business. I can say I am witnessing the future of business.” Bonnie is now the managing director of a social investment consultancy she founded in the UK, where she continues to consult for social enterprises.

Devotion to Business Engenders New Possibilities
Bonnie recalled how challenging it was to share her social enterprise concept with others. Yet her perseverance and eventual success show that anything is possible. In 2017, she was named a Forbes 30 Under 30 Social Entrepreneur (Europe) honouree in recognition of her dedication and foresight. She became a member of CUHK’s Global Alumni Advisory Board alongside another CUHK Business School alumnus, Peter Hung, President, Licensing and Branded Ventures of Forbes Global Media Holdings. As board members, they help the university provide more opportunities for students to broaden their global horizons.

Peter Hung, President, Licensing and Branded Ventures of Forbes Global Media Holdings (6th from right in Photo 1; 1st from left in Photo 2), and Bonnie Chiu, Co-founder of Lensational (3rd from right in Photo 1; 1st from right in Photo 2).

“I realised from my collaboration with Peter through Forbes that the global business community is beginning to care deeply about social responsibility and environmental issues. This prompted my consultancy firm to assist enterprises in developing and implementing their ESG strategies and standards. I am doing that across Asia, Europe, Middle East and Africa and hoping to contribute positively to humanity’s common future.”

Looking to the future, Bonnie hopes that CUHK Business School will have more outstanding alumni of various ethnicities and nationalities. She also hopes that they would all remember the root of CUHK Business School, pass on its values generation after generation, and actively contribute to society.

FROM CUHK: Twists and Turns for the Better

Adam Tong (IBBA 2011)

Public Servant,

Yinchuan People’s Government

Cherry Lu (MBA 2004)

Founder & Executive Partner,

RedHill Capital

Vincent Cheng (EMBA 2022)

CEO,

Ocean Science (Hong Kong)

Q1. Tell us about your career redirection.
  • Adam: I founded my own IT business in Hong Kong after graduation. As my understanding towards the strategic progress of the Belt and Road initiatives enriched over the years, I decided to move to Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region and contribute to its development as a public servant.
  • Cherry: As a clinical medicine degree holder in the private healthcare sector, I was initiated into the burgeoning venture capital market during my MBA study and found healthcare investment my true calling. After a 13-year tenure in the field, I founded my own company in 2018.
  • Vincent: Previously I have tapped into different trades, from frozen food and logistics to chemical imports and private tuition. Recently I decided to stop hopping around and settle with start-ups on marine and medical technology.
Q2. Why did you decide to take such a big leap?
  • Adam: While Northwest China gave off the impression of a backwater region, it had its very own potential waiting to happen. My entrepreneurial experiences and business acumen boosted in first-tier cities could come into play here and bring the impact I wish to see.
  • Cherry: I always look beyond the present and plan in reverse, and this change of professional pursuit came natural to me given my passion in entrepreneurial pursuits. Starting a business in the context of a downward market trend is not easy, but you can only gain a new perspective outside your comfort zone.
  • Vincent: Business opportunities for entrepreneurs are plentiful in China, but I learnt from my EMBA study that success is sometimes more about quality rather than quantity. We all know that technology will completely change our lives, and filling the gap between research and product incubation in the field is how I can harness my strengths to create greater value.
Q3. What kind of business potential do you see in your current capacity and how can Hong Kong tap into that?
  • Adam: The industrial structure in Ningxia is rather primitive, and so I think its major potential lies in the innovation and technology sector and the creative industry, which still lag the national economy and rely heavily on foreign service providers. There is a huge need for Hong Kong talent in these ends.
  • Cherry: The healthcare industry in the Greater Bay Area is venture capital’s new promised land. With issues like ageing population and AI technology development factored in, the industry will undergo a revolutionary transition and Hong Kong will be able to leverage the synergy in the region by pouring in its talent and academic resources.
  • Vincent: Hong Kong is blessed with cutting-edge research and a comprehensive policy framework, while mainland China boasts solid industry infrastructures and a vast market. With borders fully opened, collaborations within the region will help consolidate the strengths of Hong Kong as an innovation and technology hub.
Q4. How did your study in CUHK Business School empower you to navigate changing business landscapes?
  • Adam: I was supported by my professors and mentors along the way, and they guided me through all my twists and turns. CUHK Business School was the gateway to my entrepreneurial dreams, and I still benefit from the experiences and social network it enabled.
  • Cherry: My start-up proposal for a business plan contest during my MBA study turned out to be the prototype with which I started my venture capital investment career. I learnt from this twist that uncertainty and possibility are two sides of the same coin. With a firm grasp on the rigid market demand, you can always identify the right opportunity.
  • Vincent: The EMBA programme taught me the importance to stay grounded and make all efforts to strengthen our subject expertise. We are living in an era of “always-on” transformation, and only through a solid grasp of details can we push our intellectual boundaries to lead changes.
