For a sample of 210 households, one-third of the households do not have any pets, one-third of the households each have 1 pet, and the rest of the households each have 2 pets. Which of the following statistics for the sample are equal to 1?

I. The average (arithmetic mean) number of pets per household.
II. The median number of pets per household.
III. The range of the numbers of pets per household.

A. I only
B. II only
C. III only
D. I and II only
E. I, II and III

So we see that 1/3 has zero, 1/3 have one, and 1/3 have two pets.

So the average is [70(0) + 70(1) + 70(2)]/210 = 210/210 = 1

We also see that the median must be 1; however, the range is 2 - 0 = 2.
