Re: GMAT CLUB OLYMPICS: Internet search engines record the search history [#permalink]
Assumption should connect the premise(s) of the arguments presented to the conclusion. The negation test can be used to identify the right choice.

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history.
This can be preposition to the conclusion and not an assumption.

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results.
This is not an assumption, as it indeed against the conclusion.

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users.
This is the assumption which is correctly connects the premise to conclusion. If we do negation test, this breaks the conclusion.
So, C is the answer choice.

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising.
This is a strengthener to the conclusion but not an assumption.

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers.
This does not support the conclusion and hence not an assumption.

Therefore, internet search users would benefit from taking the time to learn how to opt out of search history tracking --> meaning that advertisement based on search history create some problem to users // B is the best fit answer

Internet search engines record the search history of users, unless a user follows a specific set of frequently complex steps to opt out of such tracking. Users who do not successfully complete these steps can find themselves subjected to regular, targeted advertising in search results based on their search histories. Therefore, internet search users would benefit from taking the time to learn how to opt out of search history tracking.

Conclusion: would benefit from taking the time to learn how to opt out.
what will be the benefit, it is not mentioned in the argument. The option that will plug this gap will be the correct answer

Which of the following must be assumed to believe the conclusion about opting out of search history tracking?

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history.1
- irrelevant

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results.
- its a weakner - conveying that Internet users find it convenient to receive

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users.
- negation of this option will not break the conclusion
- many - means 3 to 100

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising.
- it saying that ignoring advertisement is significantly time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising.
- this option is bridging the gap
- CORRECT

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers.
- irrelevant

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history.
The argument falls apart if search enginers have limited capacity

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results.
Even if it is convenient, they would benefit by blocking such ads.

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users.
not related with conclusion

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising. I
time factor is not compared in the argument

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers.
It is not necessary to be intentionally high. It can be high due to some technical complexity.

Answer: D

Internet search engines record the search history of users, unless a user follows a specific set of frequently complex steps to opt out of such tracking. Users who do not successfully complete these steps can find themselves subjected to regular, targeted advertising in search results based on their search histories. Therefore, internet search users would benefit from taking the time to learn how to opt out of search history tracking.

Which of the following must be assumed to believe the conclusion about opting out of search history tracking?

Assumption can be
1) what kind of benefit users can have or why users seek for any benefits or what kind of pain problems can be resolved by opting out of search history tracking.
2) any reason on why user should learn complex steps to opt out of search history tracking.
With this in mind we can look at the options.

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history.1 --> Incorrect. Unlimited amount of search history can be stored. This can be beneficial to the user and may not opt out of search history tracking. this cannot be an assumption.

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results. --> Incorrect. Since users do not find it inconvenient to receive advertising, they may not opt out of tracking.

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users. --> Incorrect. It might be frequent complaint but that doesn't necessarily mean they want to opt out of it. Also, many is a red flag. this cannot be generalized for all users.

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising. --> Correct. Since ignoring is not less time consuming than to learn to opt out means author believes user will learn the complex steps which can be performed frequently as it won't take much time compared to ignoring the advertisements and over a long period of time can be beneficial.

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers. --> Incorrect. Revenues is out of scope.

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users. - Not sure if complaint is frequent or not, May be or may not be, can't be assumed, Eliminate

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising - If ignoring takes less time than learning how to opt out of advertisements then the argument falls apart, Assumption. Correct

IMO D

Reasoning:-

1. A- Does it harm the user? Not mentioned anywhere. Eliminated
2. B- Inconvenience is not welcome- but we are talking about benefits and not annoyance. It can be inconvenient but maybe it does not harm them. Eliminated
3. C- Same as B. They can complain because it is an inconvenience. Eliminated
4. E- The complexity of the process is not relevant here at all. Eliminated

in D- if the users have to waste significantly more time ignoring the advertisements than learning how to get rid of them- then it would benefit them to learn this process.

Which of the following must be assumed to believe the conclusion about opting out of search history tracking?

The answer should be some relation between opting out and targeted advertisements.

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history.
Does not effect the argument.

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results.
Then, there is no requirement of learning how to opt out.

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users.
Does not help in understanding the benefits of learning to opt out.

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising.
Correct. It talks of benefit in terms of time spent on these advertisements.

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers.
Does not affect. May be a weakener if at all there is something to the option.

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history. - this is providing extra info but does not suggest if users have any problem with this! This option is not providing any significant statement which can be assumed for statement that internet users would be benefit if they learn to opt out.

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results. - if the users don't find it as.a problem, then why would they take the pain to learn how to opt out?

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users. - If this is actually complaint from many internet users then they would take the pain to learn to opt out from the advertising model. This has to be assumed.

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising. - if watching the advertisements does not make much of difference and both are almost time consuming and may be (painstaking) then why would the user learn to opt out?

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers. --- if the users find it really complex, they might not follow the steps. plus this option really does not provide any new information. it is already given in the passage that the steps are complex, this option further just tells us why it has been kept complex.

Explanation:

Therefore, internet search users would benefit from taking the time to learn how to opt-out of search history tracking.

Which of the following must be assumed to believe the conclusion about opting out of search history tracking?

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history. Incorrect Irrelevant nothing to do with advertisement or complex steps to opt-out of such tracking

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results. Incorrect not inconvenient means it is okay to receive advertising in their search results.

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users. - Correct it is a correct assumption, as we know it is very complex steps to opt-out of tracking, we watch som many targeted advertisements; if we learn once how to opt-out once, we will not see advertisements.

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time-consuming than learning how to opt-out of such advertising. Incorrect It is supporting the targeted advertisement, in paragraph we discussed opposite of it.

E. The complexity of search engine opt-out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers. Incorrect If they make steps easy for opting out of tracking, their revenues will decrease. can be correct but option C looks better. So chosen option C.

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history.

Let’s negate this one: even if limited amount of search history is recorded, that can be enough reason to get rid of the targeted advertisement they lead. So, incorrect.

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results.

Let’s negate: user find it inconvenient to receive ad. Will this invalidate the conclusion above? Nope. So, incorrect.

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users.

Let’s negate: regular ad is NOT a frequent complaint of many users. Even if it’s not a frequent complaint, users still may benefit from learning how to do those steps. So, incorrect.

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising.

Let’s negate: ignoring is significantly less time consuming than learning those steps. This means that we are losing more than we are gaining.
If we believe the conclusion then we must benefit from learning those intricate steps.
After opting out of such recording, we probably must gain more than we lose. Opportunity cost as we say.
But what if we lose more than we gain?
What if simply not paying attention to the ad is much less time-consuming than learning those steps?
In this case we won’t end up with net benefit.
The choice that tackles this gap is D.

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers.

Let’s negate: the complexity is not intentionally high. This has nothing to with the conclusion, hence out.

So D

A. Search engines are capable of recording an unlimited amount of any individual’s search history.
Its a true thing but not adding any value to learning that complex thing

B. Internet users find it not inconvenient to receive advertising in their search results.
If they find it convenient, why to learn

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users.
Correct. If its a regular complaint, then it is a painful issue needs to be solved

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising.
Time was never an issue

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers.
But we have to learn it, however complex it is

C. Regular advertising in search results is a frequent complaint of many internet users.
REJECTED - While REGULAR Advertising is a complaint,
nothing is said about TARGETTED Advertising in this option.

D. Ignoring targeted advertising is not significantly less time consuming than learning how to opt out of such advertising. I
RIGHT ANSWER - Since the targetted Ads are irritiating the users, it is well worth their time ot learn how to opt out.

E. The complexity of search engine opt out steps is intentionally high, since search engines derive revenues from the number of viewers they deliver to advertisers.
REJECTED - While the first part might be true, there is no reason to believe that the users do not want the search company to make money using their search history.
