Are there any new questions in GMAT Official Guide 2023-2024 Bundle, Focus edition?

I don't think there are any, and for sure there are no DS Verbal questions.

Thank you carcass for the confirmation. I almost placed an order for OG after I read about "verbal DS" question...

Yet, indeed, I do not see any geometry questions in PS and DS now. That is a noticeable and meaningful absence. Do you see any other absences that are noteworthy? Thanks again!

Hello carcass , did you happen to complete the comparison of DI guide with existing OG's / Review books?
Is there any thing new in the DI guide viz. DS verbal questions?

carcass wrote:
I reckon the following sir

1) before drawing any conclusion about these new OGs I would wait we go through every single OGs (four in total)

2) In terms of contents the questions are more or less the same so the balance is fair. However, what surprised me was the DS count: IF I am not wrong, doing simple math in 2022 we had 240 (239) DS and now just 104 DS questions.

3) following the second point, I would wait to scan the DI guide. Then the debate will be rampant I guess

maybe they really focus on the new specific guide. I do not know

I think it is a very good question but I feel the Focus has so many whacky things, that this one does not quite come to the top of the whacky list... but yes, it is comparing apples and oranges and there is a question how they completed these in general and published ahead of time. Perhaps they have used the IR scores from current tests? It is suspect.

P.S. We are talking to the GMAC Product Manager at 2 PM Pacific Today - Stop by the YouTube to post some questions in the chat to them:

Everyone is (rightly) upset and focused on the "no new questions or logic-based DS in the GMAT Focus official materials!" issue.

However, I'm still thinking about those wacky GMAT Focus to GMAT Classic (and vice versa) concordance tables.

Two burning questions:

1) Why don't the 2 tables equate to the same scores in both directions?

2) How can we possibly convert a GMAT Focus score to a classic GMAT score, when IR doesn't count toward the total score on the classic GMAT, but DI does count toward the total score on the Focus?

Obviously a 760 with an 8 on IR would convert to a much higher Focus score than a 760 with a 1 on IR, for example.

GMAT score is valid for five years. You can use it for five years since the date you have taken it. You cannot use it for more than five years into the future.

I had a question on the GMAT Focus DI Section...

Understand that in the current format, if you get a single question within a set of IR wrong, the test discounts the answers for other questions within that set.

Would the approach be same in Focus Edition?? I see there's 20 questions (mix between IR and DS) within DI. So assuming 3 sets of 4 questions each, would the entire set be marked wrong if I get one of the answers wrong in the set?

FYI - something I only discovered recently after getting the official guide but Coordinate Geometry is still there. It survived the purge. It seems coordinate geometry is categorized as functions and algebra for GMAT purposes.

PS. I have previously thought it would be a part of geometry and I think incorrectly indicated the few times that it was also removed but that was incorrect. So heads up.

Nice catch and thanks.

Who would have thought that coordinate geometry wouldn't count as...geometry? GMAC should have been more specific, of course—but this news makes sense, since linear and quadratic equations are such a large portion of the current exam.

bb Thanks, I saw Coordinate Geometry in the "Math Review" section, but in a quick search of the problems, I didn't see any questions with coordinates/slope/lines still there, just this "Tides at Bay Cove" graph, are you aware of any other questions?

Hi I am planning to give GMAT by November / December .
Should i prepare for focus edition or keep preparing for the older version.?
Once GMAT focus edition will start , will the older GMAT still be there or will it be totally gone?

Need help in these questions.

The current older GMAT is likely to coexist with the Focus Edition for a few months at least. We don't know the exact dates yet.

If you haven't yet started preparing, then the Focus Edition is probably a smarter choice - because there is less to prepare, no Sentence Correction and no Geometry.
Unless Sentence Correction is a strong area, or unless Integrated Reasoning is a weak area. Currently Integrated Reasoning does not count. In GMAT Focus it will.

Hi EtaCarnia,

I agree with vv65, but it seems that you've already started preparing for the current GMAT.

The Focus Edition reduces the importance of both the verbal and quantitative sections (while increasing the importance of IR/DI). If that sounds good, you may prefer the Focus Edition. That said, you should also reach out to your target schools to confirm that they'll accept FE scores.

GMAC has said that the current GMAT will continue to be available till "early next year". They most likely want to make sure that it's available for this cycle.

Is it known which colleges would be accepting the Focus Scores & which colleges won't for the intake of 2024? Also is there a blog or a video which can guide on how ADs are planning to compare the score of the two exams, will it come down to percentiles?

Hi Harshani,

Registration for the Focus Edition opens August 29, 2023 (testing starts in Q4 2023), so you can't register just yet.

Lots of great takeaways from this GMAT Focus official practice exam analysis, but here's mine: DS has gone from about 15 questions per GMAT (14 counted) to only about 6 questions per test (5 counted?). Unfortunately, improving on DS isn't going to be the score hack that it used to be.

Much ado about nothing (and certainly some GMAC revisionist history) re: this whole new "logic-based DS" question type that never actually happened. "What we meant to say was, the DS question type that we previously claimed was new for the Focus Edition was actually there on the classic GMAT the whole time. Thus, there are no new question types." Whatever you say, GMAC: that's the conclusion most of us had drawn many weeks ago—until you provided contradictory information!

Thanks mcelroytutoring for this.. Super helpful! I had couple questions..

- What do you mean when you say '5 counted?'
- How was the overall difficulty of the other existing question types (QA, RC, CR, IR)?
- Did you notice the incremental difficulty level between sections? I read in one of these posts that as you progress through sections, the difficulty is adjusted per performance in previous section.
- How about split of # of Questions in CR and RC?
- How about coordinate geometry? I understand this is also part of the new test.
