Re: If the length and width of rectangle A are 10 percent less and 30 perc [#permalink]

If the length and width of rectangle A are 10 percent less and 30 percent less respectively than the length and width of rectangle B, the area of A is equal to what percent of the area of B?

(A) 63%
(B) 60%
(C) 40%
(D) 6%
(E) 3%

As nothing is mentioned about the sides we can assume that length and breadth of the rectangle B be \(100\) & \(100\) respectively

so rectangle A's length and breadth will be \(90\) & \(70\)

Hence % area of A \(= (\frac{90*70}{100*100})*100 = 63%\)

We can let L = the length of rectangle B and W = the width of rectangle B. Thus, the area of rectangle B is LW and the area of rectangle A is (0.9L)(0.7W) = 0.63LW.

So, the area of rectangle A is 63% of the area of rectangle B.
