Re: In Manila, Phillipines, one of the largest shopping malls in the world [#permalink]
In Manila, Phillipines, one of the largest shopping malls in the world, the recently-opened SM Mall of Asia, is threatening the viability of other "super-malls" in Manila, but its appearance has had a positive effect on many small businesses in the area. The SM Mall o f Asia has few of the same attractions as other Manila super-malls, but it has become of the largest tourist destinations in the Phillipines.

Which of the following contributes most to an explanation of the difference between the SM Mall of Asia's effect on other super-malls and small businesses?

(A) Tourists often visit the Phillipines because of the wide variety of shopping opportunities. Incorrect

they can visit for other super malls, not for SM mall

(B) The locations of super-malls, including the SM Mall of Asia, are carefully chosen to limit competition between super-malls. Incorrect

competition between super malls is irrelevant

(C) The SM Mall of Asia is home to the only Olympic-sized ice skating rink in the Phillipines. Incorrect

cant explain SM Mall of Asia's effects

(D) The opening of a new super-mall has increased the number of weekend tourists visiting Manila, and these tourists typically visit only one super-mall. Correct

so, by increasing number of tourist SM malls help other malls, because tourist are visit not only SM mall, but also other malls

(E) The success of a super-mall is often dependent on the major retailers chosen as "anchor stores",îand the SM Mall of Asia has more anchor stores than other Manila super-malls. Incorrect

new info, success of a supper mall is irrelevant

HI Bunuel,
I have the following doubt about option D:
The option tells us that the weekend tourists visit only one super-mall but it doesn't tell us that most of them prefer 'the SM Mall of Asia' over others and if they do why they do so.
Please help me understand this.

Re: In Manila, Phillipines, one of the largest shopping malls in the world [#permalink]
(A) Tourists often visit the Phillipines because of the wide variety of shopping opportunities.
This cannot help us about the fact how the small retailers were positively impacted

(B) The locations of super-malls, including the SM Mall of Asia, are carefully chosen to limit competition between super-malls.
If it's primary objective was limiting competition then how was the tourist population so high in one singular location which can directly correlate with increased sales

(C) The SM Mall of Asia is home to the only Olympic-sized ice skating rink in the Phillipines.
This is one glance expelling option since we don't know as of this is the additional entertaiment

(D) The opening of a new super-mall has increased the number of weekend tourists visiting Manila, and these tourists typically visit only one super-mall.
This can significantly resolve the paradox since the tourist are all one place at a time this can account for the increase in footfall and if they tens not to go to the new mall then they can visit the small malls which will significantly improve their buisness

(E) The success of a super-mall is often dependent on the major retailers chosen as "anchor stores",îand the SM Mall of Asia has more anchor stores than other Manila super-malls
This however doesn't give us the reason as of how it affected the positive retailers
Hence IMO D
