Jane will maybe ask that her boss increase her salary.

A. maybe ask that her boss increase : Probably is more apt in this context . Eliminate A

B. probably ask that her boss increases : In the subjunctive, the verb number is not present and only the infinitive form is used . So the correct verb form will be " increase" Eliminate B

C. probably ask that her boss increase : Will prefer this one to A. Correct

D. probably ask her boss to add an increase to : This is long and awkward. The better form will be "probably ask her boss to increase her salary" Eliminate D

E. probably ask that her boss will increase : It's wrong to use "will" in the subjunctive form. Eliminate E

A. maybe ask that her boss increase
maybe usage is colloquial/informal and not grammatically correct.

B. probably ask that her boss increases
Breaks the subjunctive mood of using the base form of the verb (e.g., prepare, walk, eat, seek etc). Here it should be 'increase'

C. probably ask that her boss increase
Correct subjunctive mood usage. Hence the correct answer choice is C.

D. probably ask her boss to add an increase to
Isn't it add and increase same, and puts the sentence into redundancy?

E. probably ask that her boss will increase
Subjunctive mood error, as will is unnecessary.

Re: Jane will maybe ask that her boss increase her salary. A. maybe ask [#permalink]
I don't think any option is good. But among the given option C is the best

"Maybe" does not go with "will" --> Remove A
"Increases" Not the correct verb --> Remove B
"Add an increase" Redundancy --? Remove D
"Boss will increase" Meaning error --> Remove E

Question for experts: "Ask" is a subjunctive word. Is "that" required for "ask" I think "probably ask her boss to increase" is the best grammatical sentence

Jane will ask: Is in the category of command subjunctive & therefore we need to use the verb in its base form.

To learn more on subjunctive verbs, I strongly recommend you to read this article

A. maybe ask that her boss increase
maybe is unidiomatic.

B. probably ask that her boss increases
increases violates the subjunctive rule. We need the verb in its base form i.e. increase

C. probably ask that her boss increase
Fits perfectly

D. probably ask her boss to add an increase to
add an increase in redundant.

E. probably ask that her boss will increase
Same as B. will increase is not acceptable
