Julia purchased a car on an installment plan. She made a down payment of $2,550 and then made n monthly payments of $155 each. If Julia paid a total of $9,060 for the car,how many monthly payments did she make?

A. 30
B. 36
C. 42
D. 48
E. 54

We can form an equation based on the given information.

Total = 9060
Down Payment = 2550
Monthly Installment = 155

Question : Number of monthly payments.

2550 + n(155) = 9060

155 n = 6510

n = 42.

Thus the best answer is C. Julia made 42 monthly payments.

\(9060 = 2550 + 155n\)

Or, \(155n = 6510\)

Or, \(n = 42\), Answer must be (C) 42

We can let n = the number of monthly payments and create the equation:

2550 + 155n = 9060

155n = 6510

n = 6510/155 = 42

Answer: C

Just wanted to add that while it was easy to reduce 6510/155 to its lowest term 1302/31. I just looked at the answer choices to see which one will yield 2 as the units digit. 42 is the only answer which will yield units digit 2 when multiplied with 1 of 31. In order to save time, didn't try to double check.

Pretty straight forward.
Assume n to be number of monthly payments to be made. The equation that needs to be solved for n is:

=> 9060 = 2550 + 155*n
=> n = (9060 - 2550) / 155
=> n = 42.
Answer is choice (C).

Solution:

Total cost = $ 9060

=>Total cost = Down Payment + n * Each monthly instalment

=>9060 = 2550 + n * (155)

Solving,155n = 6510

=>n = 42 (option c)

The down payment Julia made is $2,550. This amount is not part of the monthly payments. So, we need to subtract the down payment from the total amount she paid to determine the remaining amount covered by the monthly payments.

Total amount paid for the car - Down payment = Remaining amount covered by monthly payments
$9,060 - $2,550 = $6,510

Now, we need to determine how many monthly payments of $155 each are required to cover the remaining amount of $6,510.

Number of monthly payments = Remaining amount covered by monthly payments / Monthly payment amount
n = $6,510 / $155 = 42

Therefore, Julia made 42 monthly payments.
