A. 0.68x
B. 0.73x
C. 0.76x
D. 0.81x
E. 0.84x

\(\frac{17*x + 0.50x*8}{25} = 0.84x\), Answer must be (E)

Last Monday a certain store sold 17 wrenches at x dollars each. Last Tuesday the store reduced its prices and sold an additional 8 wrenches at 0.5x dollars each. Which of the following is equal to the average (arithmetic mean) price, in dollars, of the 25 wrenches that the store sold last Monday and Tuesday?

Last Monday: Total sales in dollars = 17x
Last Tuesday: Total sales in dollars = 8*0.5x = 4x
Arithmetic mean = \(\frac{{Total Sales in Dollars}}{{Total sales in units}}\)
Arithmetic mean = \(\frac{21x}{25}\) multiply numerator and denominator by 4 we get \(\frac{84x}{100}\) = 0.84x

Correct answer is option E

One could solve this question by picking a smart number. Always check which smart number will be useful for a particular question. Here the options are two decimals times x. Hence assuming x equal to 100 will help us infer the correct option.

Since x = 100;
Last Monday: Total sales @ $100 each in dollars = 1700 [17 * 100]
Last Tuesday: Total sales 50% of $100 i.e. @ $50 each in dollars = 400 [8 * 50]

Total sales is 2100

Arithmetic mean = \(\frac{{Total Sales in Dollars}}{{Total sales in units}}\)
Arithmetic mean = \(\frac{2100}{25}\) = $84 or 0.84x

Correct answer is option E

The average is:

(17x + 8(0.5x))/25 = 21x/25 = 84x/100 = 0.84x

Given: Last Monday a certain store sold 17 wrenches at x dollars each. Last Tuesday the store reduced its prices and sold an additional 8 wrenches at 0.5x dollars each.
Asked: Which of the following is equal to the average (arithmetic mean) price, in dollars, of the 25 wrenches that the store sold last Monday and Tuesday?

Total price of 25 wrenches sold = 17x + 8(.5x) = 17x + 4x = 21x
Average price of 25 wrenches sold = 21x/25 = .84x
