A. had more in common with our modern universities than with our local fitness clubs, holding lectures and discussions on philosophy, literature, and music, and offering free public libraries, long before teachers such as Plato and Aristotle had begun their work what is correctly used - modifiers : holding and offering as verb-ing modifiers ; HAD more in common : past perfect tense to show an earlier event ; AND : to list items whats wrong - no requirement of had begun- it should be simple past 'began'
