Hey guys,

I have seen conflicting views with regards to the importance of the overall Gmat Score (200-800) as compared to the V/Q split.

Could you share you experiences with regards to the respective weights the various business schools place on how you received your score?

For me personally this is very intersting as I am much better at Verbal compared to Quant and would thus potentially be able to achieve a high overall score despite a low Quant result.
However, I have heard that a large gap in the percentiles might be a downside during the application process.

Please let me hear your thoughts.

Hi Chris!

As far as i know, a good score because of excellent performance in one section and an average/ below average performance in the other section is not what the good colleges are looking for when these colleges consider your score card. A 750+ score should be 45+ in Quant and 40+ in Verbal rather than 51 in quant and 35-40 in verbal. At the end of the day, the purpose of the exam is defeated if your score is good because of one section instead of both the sections.
But, its always best to wait for experts before jumping to any conclusions.

Hi Chris,

You ask a very interesting question. Although there is not one definitive answer, I can say that many top business schools are unapologetically quant-driven, meaning that a lot of the time, they are looking for a great quant score IN ADDITION TO a great overall score. So, if you are looking at top 10 schools, you should shoot for great quant and verbal scores, so that you have a high and balanced overall GMAT score.

With that said, what is your GMAT score goal? By when do you plan to take the GMAT? To what schools do you plan to apply?

A very low score in any of the two will not let anyone have a overall higher score. Someone who might have high verbal score say V48 but Q38 reaching to 690 is a low score anyway.

It also depends on your goals. If you are consulting focused (MBB) but have a very low quant score then it is a red flag to many schools and companies. Q47-51 are all good score if overall score is high.

It would be debatable to weigh one more than the other because of the requirements of industry/function/role etc.

Hi Scott,

thank you for your feedback.

I would like to apply to top 10 schools in Europe and I am aiming for a GMAT of around 720 or above.
That said I have been during quite well in verbal prep test (42 & 46 in my GMAT test respectivly) but I did not manage to get decent Quant scores (sub 40´s)

I plan to take my GMAT in mid August if I see improvements in my quant performance, dream schools for me would be Said or Judge (although I might try my luck at LBS or INSEAD as well).
