A. standard savings accounts have less financial benefit than do mutual fund investments managed by professionals and more of a quality they believe is

B. standard savings accounts have less financial benefit than mutual fund investments managed by professional and more of a quality believed to be

C. standard savings accounts have less financial benefit than that of mutual funds managed by professionals and have more qualities of a kind believed to be

D. financial benefit of standard savings accounts is less than mutual fund investments managed by professionals and they have more benefit of a kind believe to be

E. financial benefit is less in standard savings accounts than that of mutual funds managed by professionals and more of their benefit is of a kind they believe is

Before the underlined portion we are talking about benefits of an account, for this reason,we will remove D and E.

Now inline are the problems in A and C
A. standard savings accounts have less financial benefit than do mutual fund investments managed by professionals and more of a quality they believe is
Incorrect comparison between standard savings account and the effect of mutual fund investments

B. standard savings accounts have less financial benefit than mutual fund investments managed by professional and more of a quality believed to be
Correct comparison. SSA has less financial benefit than MFI.

C. standard savings accounts have less financial benefit than that of mutual funds managed by professionals and have more qualities of a kind believed to be
Incorrect comparison between standard savings account and that(effect) of mutual fund investments

Official Explanation:

This is a fairly long, complicated sentence, and when we read it the first time, it might sound perfectly fine, but who is the "they"? The “professionals"? It may sound logical to us, but grammatically, it's unclear.

Choice (B) removes the confusing “they" and the unnecessary “do” (“[these things] have less than [these other things)" is clear enough); it's a good way to make this sentence clearer.

“Than that of” in (C) is another unnecessary phrasing like (A)'s “than do," not to mention the awkward "have more qualities of a kind believed to be," which is redundant: we only need of a quality" or “of a kind," not both.

It is difficult or impossible to understand that (D) and (E) are even comparing standard savings accounts and mutual funds, so we know that neither can be our answer.
The correct answer is Choice (B).

B seemed correct but shouldn't the word "professional" be plural???

The author is addressing two key information about Standard savings account-
1) have less financial benefit
2) have more qualities (repetition of have is optional)

Furthermore, a comparison is done between SSA and MF to find out which one among them provides less financial benefit.

The verb+ing modifier that author kick starts the above sentences talks about the research performed on the SSA.

So taking into account the above inputs- B does the job.

My reasoning if it helps anyone:

A) What is they referring to? Professionals? Doesn't make much sense if so. Also it's not necessary to use do. Do is a pronoun that can represent a verb, so in this sentence we have: standard savings accounts have less benefit than have mutual fund investments. Doesn't sound too right.

B) CORRECT, we are comparing standard savings accounts to mutual funds. Although their is a typo in this sentence. Mutual funds aren't managed by ONE professional. It should be plural "professionals"

C) What is that referring to? Literally nothing...

D) You cannot compare benefit to savings account. You need a "that" in this case.

E) This once again makes a comparison mistake. You cannot compare standard savings accounts to financial benefit...

Agreed, B sounded best but I marked it wrong as "Managed by professional" reads incorrect

Re: Keeping with the findings of most contemporary economic analysis of in [#permalink]
when i tried to correct the underlined part but i got confused, so i decided to solve by CANCELING OUT the wrong answer choice.
First, sentence begins with "keeping with the ......public," comma must be followed by a NOUN phrase that is being explained prior to comma. It is not beneficial benefits which are being analysed and have saving accounts but it is STANDARD SAVING ACCOUNTS being analysed. Cross out D and E
we have left
A-they, who? wrong
B- correct answer
C-wordy, no need to use kind of

Also, "AND" used which means two side of and must be parallel
Standard saving accounts have LESS BENEFITS and MORE OF A QUALITY

Isn't C the correct choice here ? Isn't managed by professional (singular) incorrect ?
