Re: Soaring advertising costs accounted for more than a third of expenses [#permalink]
i believe A is correct "Soaring advertising costs" is the subject here and a more significant portion refers to soaring advertising costs not advertising costs, so in comparison a more significant portion than it was perfectly makes sense.

Can someone clarify if i am wrong?

Soaring advertising costs accounted for more than a third of expenses for the nightclub last year, a more significant portion than it was in any previous year.

(A) a more significant portion than it was

(B) which is more significant than it has been

(C) a more significant portion than they have been

(D) a more significant portion than

(E) which is more significant than it was

Proceed this question with POE.

A) It cannot refer to "costs". Hence eliminate.
B)It cannot refer to "costs". Hence eliminate.
C) Wordy but hold
D) Looks perfect
E)It cannot refer to "costs". Hence eliminate.

Out of C and D ; D Looks concise and hence the answer.

Hi Shanmukha, you are right about the fact that "Soaring advertising costs" is the subject. However, it is still a plural subject, as the word 'soaring' simply helps to describe or modify the nature of these advertising costs.
