Adding to chetan2u 's answer, notice that the system only operates when someone tries to open a secure door. It doesn't even apply to people who are just passing by...

They would amount to the same thing IF (C) would say that no two people can share ALL of the same facial characteristics. But it doesn't say that - it says that they can't share even one part. This is not stated in the text, and doesn't have to be true for the system to work: people can have identical lips, but because their eyes are different, the system will work.

Hi Harsha..

What should be a CONCLUSION. something that flows out of the PARA and is in the core of the discussion.
here the point being talked of is THE NEW SYSTEM so the conclusion should talk of something concerning it..
Even if B is correct, it can just be a premise or a fact helping in some conclusion about te new system..

Thank you sir!! To the point !! I see that I should read the options more closely.
Thank you again.

Thank you sir!! I was clear with option B.. yeah got your point of keeping the conclusion within reach of the para.. need to work on that aspect.
Thank you again!

I do not see how choice E is supported by the passage. Can anyone point this out please?

Official Explanation

STEP 1: IDENTIFY THE QUESTION TYPE

Since the stem asks you to accept the statements as true and draw a conclusion on the basis of them, this is an Inference question.

STEP 2: UNTANGLE THE STIMULUS

When untangling the stimulus of an Inference question, briefly paraphrase the important facts to ensure you understand them. The stimulus tells you that a new electronic security system is completely fail-safe and will never allow an unauthorized person through a door equipped with the system. The system allows an authorized person to enter solely on the basis of the person’s appearance and facial features.

STEP 3: PREDICT THE ANSWER

Attempting to predict the correct inference is difficult here, but on the GMAT, remember that an inference is something that must be true, not just something that could or might be true. It’s crucial to approach the answer choices with this definition in mind.

STEP 4: EVALUATE THE CHOICES

(A) is unsupported. There is no evidence of how the security industry is going to respond to the new system, so you can’t say that this statement must be true based on what the stimulus states.

(B) also doesn’t need to be true. The new system doesn’t need to differentiate between people passing by the door and people trying to enter, so long as it lets authorized people in and keeps unauthorized people out.

(C) is too extreme. According to the stimulus, the security system examines multiple facial features to determine identity. You don’t know that any one feature cannot be the same. All you know is that all of the features can’t be the same.

As for (D), the stimulus only discusses the likelihood that unauthorized people will be able to get past the security system and through a secure door; there is no support for a statement about costs.

That means the correct inference must be (E): if one twin is authorized and the other isn’t, you know the system must be able to tell them apart, because the stimulus states that the security system never fails.

Answer: E

Hope it helps

Key idea #1: The computer security system only lets an authorized person to pass through.
Key idea #2: This computer security system never fails

If the system never fails, then it means that it is able to successfully identify each authorized person (using visual cues), even if two people look strikingly similar (such as twins). If this premise were to hold true, then it can only be so if the system is able to pick up minute variations in the visual cues (such as those mentioned in the passage).

Let us now analyze the available answer choices:

(A) The new system is sure to be enormously successful and revolutionize the entire security industry. - Based on the information provided to us from the passage, we cannot be certain about the economic success of this security system, since the passage does not mention anything about the same. Hence, eliminate (A).

(B) The new system can differentiate between people who are seeking to open a secure door and people passing by a secure door. - The passage does not make this distinction in any way. Hence, eliminate (B)

(C) No two people have any facial features that are identical, for example, identical lips. - This conclusion is way too extreme to be drawn based on the context of this passage. Hence, eliminate (C).

(D) High costs will not make the new security system economically unviable. - The passage does not mention anything about economic consequence experienced by the security system. Hence, eliminate (D).

(E) The new computer system is able to identify some slight facial differences between people who look very similar, such as identical twins. - BINGO. This statement strengthens the premise that the security system can never fail. hence, (E) is the correct answer.
