Pack 16, Question 4 of 5:

Some wildlife managers recognize that the impact on human activity apparent in New York’s deer population is the result of "deer overabundance "- at some time in the past the deer population exploded, significantly increasing their numbers and hence our deer population predicament.

A. at some time in the past the deer population exploded, significantly increasing their numbers

B. that at some time in the past the deer population exploded that significantly increased their numbers

C. that sometime in the past the deer population exploded so that their numbers were significantly increased

D. some time in the past the deer population exploded from which their numbers were significantly increased

E. some time in the past the deer population exploded so as to increase their numbers significantly,

IMO B

A. not parallel and use of Verb-ing modifier is not right
C. "so that" refers causal relationship which is not right here
D. "from which" is awkward
E. "so as to" refers causal relationship not right..(deer population didnt explode to increase the numbers)

B. best based on POE

there is no that in non underlined part : and hence our deer population predicament.

Right. I thought “recognise that” has to be parallel.
But as Hyphen is present, it just gives extra info, so that may not be necessary in B.
And in A, the verb-ing modifier gives the result of previous clause “population is exploded”. So in this sense A is right. Without the beigninng “that” in B , it can be right. It’s a close call between A and B, I’ll go with A considering above reasons.

A. at some time in the past the deer population exploded, significantly increasing their numbers
This is INCORRECT. The beginning of this portion of the sentence does not start with “that,” so it is not parallel with “that the impact.” It does get the “their numbers” portion correct, but that’s not enough to make this our correct choice.

Sorry but is there any rule that only because a that structure occurs in the beginning of the sentence you need a parallel structure after the dash?

I mean A makes total logical sense and B sounds awful and changes the meaning a bit and the right meaning should be the one stated in the first answer choice right?

I agree with you. WHat comes after "-" looks more of a description of previous clause rather than a parallel element to previous "that clause", which experts recognize.

Some wildlife managers recognize that the impact on human activity apparent in New York’s deer population is the result of "deer overabundance "- at some time in the past the deer population exploded, significantly increasing their numbers and hence our deer population predicament.

The meaning here is that the population exploded and as a result increased the numbers and hence deer population predicament

A. at some time in the past the deer population exploded, significantly increasing their numbers

B. that at some time in the past the deer population exploded that significantly increased their numbers
:- that is incorrectly used to refer to an event of population exploding

C. that sometime in the past the deer population exploded so that their numbers were significantly increased
:- "so that" gives a notion of some intension hence wrong as there is no intension of deer to increase the population

D. some time in the past the deer population exploded from which their numbers were significantly increased
:- from which incorrectly refers to the population exploding...moreover, there is no parallelism between were increased and deer population predicament (one is clause and other is a phrase)

E. some time in the past the deer population exploded so as to increase their numbers significantly,
:- "so as to" gives a notion of some intension hence wrong

IMHO its A....

Had to choose between A and B...B rejected due to the above reasoning...Experts kindly correct me for any wrong explanation used for elimination

You were so close Suryakumar! Check out the official explanation in the comments to see how to tackle questions like this on the GMAT. This was a tougher parallelism question for sure, and you were on the right track for the most part. :)

Hi VeritasKarishma AjiteshArun

I could not decipher why choice B is correct, especially because of the usage of "-"
As per my knowledge, hyphen generally describes the term. I don't even see any parallelism marker. Can "-" be a parallelism marker?

Please shed some light on this one.

A. at some time in the past the deer population exploded, significantly increasing their numbers
increased should be the right usage therefore out

B. that at some time in the past the deer population exploded that significantly increased their numbers
The meaning and tense is perfect therefore let us hang on to it

C. that sometime in the past the deer population exploded so that their numbers were significantly increased
at is required , moreover so usage is not conveying the right meaning therefore out

D. some time in the past the deer population exploded from which their numbers were significantly increased
which incusion leads to ambigiuty whether it's refering back to the explosion or some other time in the past therefore out

E. some time in the past the deer population exploded so as to increase their numbers significantly,
so usage is distorting the meaning and not delivering the intended reasoning therefore out

Therefore IMO B
