[quote="EMPOWERgmatVerbal"]Pack 16, Question 5 of 5:

Through investigating intended to provide information that will eventually prove crucial in the cosmetic industry, companies have altered animal-testing policies so that they no longer use animals.

A. Through investigating intended to provide information that will eventually prove

B. Through investigations intended to provide information eventually proving

C. In investigation intended to provide information that eventually proves

D. In investigating intended to provide information eventually proving

E. In investigations intended to provide information that will eventually prove

I am unsure between B and C though. If we go by meaning: B means by using the investigations, companies have altered testing. C means in investigation, companies have altered.
Can anyone point the correct answer?

IMO E

A. It cant be "through investigating/investigation. It can be "in investigation".
B. Same as A
C. investigation proves in the future. So it has to be future.
D. "eventually proving" is awkward
E. best based on POE

Well done, monikakumar! Great explanation! Kudos to you! :)

Hi everyone,

I think the answer to this question is C.

POE Step 1: Investigation vs. investigating: idiomatically, investigation is correct...investigating is not a suitable noun in this context imo. Eliminate A and D.

POE Step 2: Next is through vs in. We would assume that 'through investigating' would affect the end result or decision of the companies so in is correct. Eliminate B.

We are left with Options C and E.

POE Step 3: This is the most straightforward split. C is correct because information is singular so we say that information proves xyz instead of information prove.

Therefore, the answer is C.
Feel free to question to point out any mistakes in my reasoning. Cheers!

You were so close, nothing345! Option E was the correct choice - check out the official explanation in the comment section for more on how to tackle this question! We look forward to seeing you around for Pack 17, which starts on Monday!

Official Explanation

Through investigating intended to provide information that will eventually prove crucial in the cosmetic industry, companies have altered animal-testing policies so that they no longer use animals.

A. Through investigating intended to provide information that will eventually prove

B. Through investigations intended to provide information eventually proving

C. In investigation intended to provide information that eventually proves

D. In investigating intended to provide information eventually proving

E. In investigations intended to provide information that will eventually prove

This question focuses on clear and concise writing to convey the correct meaning. When discussing the investigations, it is important for clarity to stress that “investigations” are full start to finish investigations (tests) rather than the act of investigating/investigation. Let’s see how each option stacks up:

A. Through investigating intended to provide information that will eventually prove

B. Through investigations intended to provide information eventually proving

C. In investigation intended to provide information that eventually proves

D. In investigating intended to provide information eventually proving

E. In investigations intended to provide information that will eventually prove

We can eliminate options A, C, & D because they focus on the act of investigating/investigations, rather than the investigation itself. The end of the sentence also needs to be in the future tense to clearly indicate that the investigations are not yet finished. Let’s see how each option stacks up:

B. Through investigations intended to provide information eventually proving
This is INCORRECT. It does not use the future tense of the word prove.

E. In investigations intended to provide information that will eventually prove
This is CORRECT. This is clear and concise, showing that investigations are stand-alone tests. “Will eventually prove,” is correct in the future tense.

There you have it - option E is our correct choice!

Don’t study for the GMAT. Train for it.

My question may be blatant here, but I wanted to know this:
In investigations ...., Companies have altered policies...
I read the sentence like this, and tbh, none of the answer choices convey the right meaning. Ideally, as a result of investigation Companies have altered their policies. We cannot alter policies in investigation. That is the intended meaning, according to me. Am I missing something here?
Can anyone help me here?
