Re: Parent A: Watching television is harmless. In fact, some channels broa [#permalink]
Which of the following, if true, most strengthens Parent B's objection to Parent A's suggestion?

A. In a recent article, a psychologist claimed that there is still much research to be done into the link between television and learning. -> Irrelevant.

B. Placing a commercial on an educational channel is usually cheaper than placing one on a sports channel. -> Irrelevant.

C. Information presented in person to a child has a 85% higher chance of being absorbed than information presented through a television screen.-> It makes sense. Let's keep it.

D. Researchers have shown that television can be used to strengthen problem-solving skills in children. ->Somehow strengthen Parent A thoughts. Incorrect.

E. Thousands of teenagers have learned a foreign language by watching their favorite television shows. -> Incorrect, we are talking about children.

So, I think C. :)

Re: Parent A: Watching television is harmless. In fact, some channels broa [#permalink]
Parent A: Watching television is harmless. In fact, some channels broadcast content that is educational. We should let our toddlers watch the shows on those channels.
Parent B: After watching the educational channels they rarely remember anything. It would be better if we read them a book.

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens Parent B's objection to Parent A's suggestion?

Pre-thinking: Reading should have more advantages than watching television.

A. In a recent article, a psychologist claimed that there is still much research to be done into the link between television and learning. --> irrelevent

B. Placing a commercial on an educational channel is usually cheaper than placing one on a sports channel. --> cost is irrelevent

C. Information presented in person to a child has a 85% higher chance of being absorbed than information presented through a television screen. --> reading presents information in person, that has a 85% higher chance to absorb info than TV. It stregthens the Parent B's objection

D. Researchers have shown that television can be used to strengthen problem-solving skills in children. --> opposite, It stregthens the Parent A's objection

E. Thousands of teenagers have learned a foreign language by watching their favorite television shows. --> opposite, It stregthens the Parent A's objection

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens Parent B's objection to Parent A's suggestion?

A. In a recent article, a psychologist claimed that there is still much research to be done into the link between television and learning. --> It somehow strengthens Parent B's claim as there is no established link between television and learning, but it does not provide info regarding if 'reading a book has established link with learning or not?' INCORRECT.

B. Placing a commercial on an educational channel is usually cheaper than placing one on a sports channel. --> IRRELEVANT, no impact of placing a commercial on learning.

C. Information presented in person to a child has a 85% higher chance of being absorbed than information presented through a television screen. --> RELEVANT, this one clearly establishes reading a book as a more learning experience for toddlers than watching television. CORRECT.

D. Researchers have shown that television can be used to strengthen problem-solving skills in children. --> OPPOSITE. Establishes Parent A's claim over parent B's.

E. Thousands of teenagers have learned a foreign language by watching their favorite television shows. --> IRRELEVANT & OPPOSITE. We are not talking about teenagers, and this option establishes television over reading the book.

Re: Parent A: Watching television is harmless. In fact, some channels broa [#permalink]
Basically , we need to strengthen that reading a book will help to remember instead of learning from TV

D and E actually weakens the Parent B claim i.e. strengthens TV watching.
B is irrelevant as it doesn’t mention anything about learning
A doesn’t make any difference on our parent B claim. If anything, it slightly weakens parent A claim but that doesn’t mean strengthen Parent B claim.

C clearly strengthens Parent B claim- matches our pre-thinking- supports that reading a book is better than TV for learning as information presentation has higher chances

Hence C is clear winner here.

Re: Parent A: Watching television is harmless. In fact, some channels broa [#permalink]
Parent A: Education through television
Parent B: In person education is better.

Strengthens Parent B objection.

A. In a recent article, a psychologist claimed that there is still much research to be done into the link between television and learning. - Does not completely justify parent's B objection .

B. Placing a commercial on an educational channel is usually cheaper than placing one on a sports channel. - Commercials are out of scope.

C. Information presented in person to a child has a 85% higher chance of being absorbed than information presented through a television screen. Correct. Does the best to satisfy the claim.

D. Researchers have shown that television can be used to strengthen problem-solving skills in children. - Weakens parent's B objection.

E. Thousands of teenagers have learned a foreign language by watching their favorite television shows. - Again it doesn't help parent B objection in any ways.

The answer should be C as it provides a quantifiable comparison between the two ways of learning.

Parent A: Watching television is harmless. In fact, some channels broadcast content that is educational. We should let our toddlers watch the shows on those channels.
Parent B: After watching the educational channels they rarely remember anything. It would be better if we read them a book.

Argument is that toddlers are better able to absorb and retain the information - if someone read them a book as compare to information presented thought television.
any information that support this view will be strengthener

Which of the following, if true, most strengthens Parent B's objection to Parent A's suggestion?

A. In a recent article, a psychologist claimed that there is still much research to be done into the link between television and learning. - much research to be done ?? - General statement about television and learning - Out of scope

B. Placing a commercial on an educational channel is usually cheaper than placing one on a sports channel. - not comparing the cost for commercial - Irrelevant

C. Information presented in person to a child has a 85% higher chance of being absorbed than information presented through a television screen.
-Highlighting the benefits of presenting information to a child in person as compare to through television screen
- CORRECT

D. Researchers have shown that television can be used to strengthen problem-solving skills in children. - argument is comparing learning from "information presented in person" and learning from television - irrelevant

E. Thousands of teenagers have learned a foreign language by watching their favorite television shows. - argument is about child/toddlers and not teenagers - Irrelevant
