Some of the people in the nineteenth century in India encountered far more intense opposition against their struggle for social legitimacy than the organized social upheavals of most other periods.

A. against their struggle for social legitimacy than - opposition and against are redundant
B. in their struggle for social legitimacy as did - Idiom has to be "far more.... than" and not "far more...as"
C. against their struggle for social legitimacy as - opposition and against are redundant
D. in their struggle for social legitimacy than did - more than is the correct usage
E. when they struggled for social legitimacy than has - "than has" is incorrect.
